I'll be starting at Kent State in August. Since I won't be living at home I need a laptop. The thing is, I'm completely clueless about them and don't have that much money. I don't know my spending limit yet, but I know there's a lot of computer aficionados here.
Any help or tips will be greatly appreciated.

if you want reliability and quality you want a mac book. the cheapest one there is, is the i have the standard mac book about $1000. the pros about the PCs: cheap, tons of them used almost every where. cons of PCs: they can get every known computer virus. break easily.
pros about macs: no viruses, reliable, good quality, easy to use, long battery life(mine has a 5:30 battery life), web cam comes standard in every mac.
cons about mac: costly, cant play halo(can only play one kind of halo.), battery can be destroyed by leaving it plugged in over night.
trust me my brother is certified to work on computers so is my mom. my brother programs and my mom does graphics.
here is the link to apples website:http://www.apple.com/ you will not be disappointed if you get a mac.

This is the laptop I own.Its been pretty good to me so far. Yeah it has Vista, but I have seen no problems with it so far. Haven't played any games on it yet though.
What are you going to school for. If it is for something like graphic design, then you are probably going to want a Mac, like the Mac Pro Book, whether you like it or not. That is pretty much what they are designed for. In fact some places may require that you have it. My fiance used a Mac Pro Book for her interior design and graphic design majors. Heck you can even make it so it runs Windows OS on it. I am a PC owner by heart though.

For my first year I don't have a major, but I doubt I'd be doing like graphic design. For personal use, I'll probably have Photoshop, but that's about it.
I'm planning on majoring in business administration eventually though.

Then you definitely don't need a Mac. I have reaaly come to love HP's products, but that is my personal choice. There are tons of stuff out there.

I have a 4 year old HP Presario V2000. Works like a dream. I'm really impressed by it. It's by far my favorite computer I own, it's a tank! Can't keep up with my newer machines, but it's very dependable. If HP hasn't changed in 4 years, I highly recommend one!
