http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... id=artslotLYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Rev. Jerry Falwell, who founded the Moral Majority and built the religious right into a political force, died Tuesday shortly after being found unconscious in his office at Liberty University, a school executive said. He was 73.
This is a breaking news update. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) _ The Rev. Jerry Falwell was hospitalized in "gravely serious" condition after being found unconscious Tuesday in his office at Liberty University, a school executive said.
Ron Godwin, the university's executive vice president, said Falwell, 73, was found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but he said Falwell "has a history of heart challenges."
"I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast," Godwin said. "He went to his office, I went to mine, and they found him unresponsive."
Godwin said Falwell was receiving emergency care. A hospital spokeswoman said she had "no information to release at this time."
Falwell, a television evangelist who founded the Moral Majority, became the face of the religious right in the 1980s. He later founded the conservative Liberty University and serves as its president.
Falwell survived two serious health scares in early 2005. He was hospitalized for two weeks with what was described as a viral infection, then was hospitalized again a few weeks later after going into respiratory arrest. Later that year, doctors found a 70 percent blockage in an artery, which they opened with stents.
Liberty University's commencement is scheduled for Saturday, with former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich as the featured speaker.

Its difficult to find solice in the passing of a man who helped shape our country into the morally rotten corpse that it is. I realize my views are fairly liberal in the matter of Church and State, but I have come to believe that this particular man's efforts have helped break down the walls our founding fathers had established seperating those two entities. A religious zealot, a avid racist, and a complete hypocrite, I find it ironic he died in Lynchburg, VA. Still I hope he finds the real god and Jesus to his liking, but some how I don't think he will.

That pretty much sums up my feelings as well. I know his death won't change anything. The religious Right-wing conservatives will probably want to make him a saint or something.
I don't like people trying to shove their beliefs and morals
down my throat.

I would not be suprised by that attempt. I can promise that the only sainthood he'd get would be from his own false religion. His vocal warnings against social advancement, technological progress and racial mixings (yes he has gone that far,) bordered on the insane. His teachings defied the law of commonsense and have corrupted our government foundations with his bogus degrees and false law programs... Ruling on law should be done with reflection to the actual law of the land, not from over inflated religious belief and utter rejection of facts, scientific study, and EVIDENCE. A graduate lawyer of his once said, "This man is guilty because God ordained his guilt." And an avid follower of his zealotry ways has made his false god the center of his governmental structure... Aye thats right Bushicins, Little Bush as we like to call him, his entire legal cabinet is chalk full of Liberty College Graudates.

you made a bold statement And I couldn't simply reply with QFT but I think you've hit the preverbial nail on the head and while I dont celebrate the death of anyone who claims to be a man of God or peace. I can't help but feel America just became a little bit of a better place.

Counter with the arguement that Falwell was in fact a spokesmen for Christian Based Terrorism, for which in essence he was.

Alright guys, I may dispise what this man and his cohorts Pat Robertson have done over the years, but please try to keep the wording a bit more civilized.

trust me, its not unsual to want the world free of over loaded pompus jerks who cares about money more than about the people from which they control. Alot of people not blinded by the glitz and glamour of those particular branches of false religion and movements to divid the nation share the same feelings. The man started out with a hell of alot of charisma, and thats what won over alot of people... same with Pat Robertson, and even Osama bin Laden. Slowly but surely as more and more secrets of this man's cultistic dealings come to light, more and more people will be set free. Unfortunately I have no hope for those who attended Liberty University. They are brainwashed till the end.

And here I thought I would be flamed for the term "Good riddance."
EXCELLENT.
The term "Televangelist" basically means a Priest who preaches on telelvision. Although sometimes they preach the Word of God true, normally they preach "Pay us half your paycheck, be a strait, Christian White Male, and you won't go to Hell!"
So, you know, Bye Bye, Gerry. As much as I can respect a Man of God, I just don't think Heaven will accept you with pleas of "But I hated all the right things!"
Say 'Hi' to Saddam for me.

I for one am not going to mourn for that fat ****.

I just hope his casket is packed with ice, cause where he's going, he's going to need air conditioning.
