My question is, what are they planning to replace that with?

Not completely unheard of. They simple want to make sure that their individual brands don't suffer because of the bankruptcy that GM wen thru. It is a bit odd that they are doing it but hey who are we to question such things from corporate America :P

I believe, until I see proof saying otherwise, that the WP has the story incorrect.

GM is dropping the stupid little GM badges on the outsides of the cars that they started putting there 4 years ago, and still continue to look horrible.

None of the auto sites have mentioned anything about the Mark of Excellence actually being phased out of the entire company.

I for one am thrilled. That badge looks retarded on most cars, ESPECIALLY the Corvette. And it never really made the ignorant masses understand what brand was what. I know plenty of people that don't know that Pontiac, Buick, and Caddillac are GM brands, even with the stupid dinky badges on the sides.

As long as they don't get rid of the big bad bowtie!

And EP, why in the hell would GM go with the seal of Ohio? If anything, it would be Michigan. :P

Really. It's also a part of the seal of Ohio...but now I get it.

Doesn't seem like a big loss. GM is still the umbrella that covers a wide slew of brands.

And if you don't now a Pontiac or a Cadillac is a GM product a little blue logo hidden away next to a door will probably not make much difference.

Back in 2005, General Motors began adding so-called "Mark of Excellence" corporate logos to all of its vehicles. The reasoning behind the move was that with eight brands, customers needed to know that vehicles from brands like Hummer and Saturn came from the GM family. Fast forward four years and The General is now down to four brands, and the company now feels that a strong link to GM proper won't necessarily help Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. Beginning with future 2010 model year vehicles, the barely noticeable silver GM badge will not be added to new products. Vehicles like the 2010 Camaro and 2010 Equinox already don the GM logo, but the assumption is that the logos will stop appearing once the remaining inventory is used up. - Autoblog

In a move to deemphasize the parent company and increase focus on the brands themselves, GM will no longer affix the little silver logos to the sides of all its cars that identify them as GM products. - Motortrend
