Odd Eating Habits

A thought was stuck in my head, and I just had to ask, does anyone here have odd eating habits?

After moving out of the house, and living on my own for University, my lifestyle has forced me to eat 'artificial' food... only because no one's going to make food for me. And damn, it's freaking tough. Microwaving more, and cooking less. The one good thing I guess is I tend to eat alot more fruit, and what I'm getting at the grocery store is things that are healthy.

However, I've picked up the oddest habit ever... I love eating.... loafs of bread. Without anything on it. Just bread. I love it.

Am I going crazy?

You're not going crazy. :)

Actually, good quality bread shouldn't need anything extra to go along with it. However, it's still good with butter or jam or whatever one liked with bread. I'm a hobbyist baker(it sounded better in my head) and there's nothing better than fresh baked bread. :)

One thing I found to be a common pitfall in college/university life is that it's easy to rely upon cheaper food due to both cost and convenience...however, you are what you eat so be careful of going too overboard on the artificial food side of things.

I lived in on-site residence housing when I was in college and had access to decent kitchen facilities. My roommate and I would cook batches of food so we had meals for a couple of days ready to heat up when needed. The reason we did this was that it ended up costing just as much or only slightly more than purchasing the cheaper types of food and was far healthier. A friend of mine, also living in residence, would cook huge pots of chicken, veggies, and rice. It was amusing to see him go down the hall to the kitchen with a little red wagon with all of his ingredients. We always knew when he was cooking because we could smell his awesome cooking. :)

I think my main odd eating habit is that I need to be organized in how I eat. I have to arrange my food just right and even the process of eating requires precise placement of pieces of food on the fork/spoon.

I knew I loved you for a reason. In a non-creepy platonic old lady kind of way. I like baking bread, especially the part where you punch the snot out of the dough. Very cathartic. :P

Weird eating: Yup, mostly college. Add single to it too. Somehow when you're with someone else, meals become squarer. The other day I had a bottle of lemonade and a bag of M&Ms for lunch. Right after (because the irony is a delicious, delicious sauce) I gave my Freshman Seminar students a lecture on proper nutrition. Worst Professor Ever.

You CAN eat healthier and quickly but you need prep. I make food on Sundays to eat the rest of the week: a good batch of hummous and you've got lunch for the week, as long as you buy lettuce and pita and that sort of stuff. Just takes a little time. Also, crockpot. Dude. Seriously. Crockpot. Slap raw stuff in, plug in, and 8 hours later: dinner for the entire Ukrainian Army. Once you find a good crockpot cookbook, life is goooooood.

Now, is it *wonderbread* you're eating? If it's actual good delicious bread, you are just a carb-crammin' fiend, but if it's wonderbread, I worry that that stuff will just gum up your insides. I suspect that bread is made out of wallpaper paste whipped to a foam.

HK, I miss a good artisan bakery. :(

Just FYI for anyone thinking about eating raw spinach...don't. The reason is that spinach needs to be cooked to a degree in order for humans to be able to digest/absorb as much nutrition as possible from the vegetable. We just can't get all the goodness we'd want from raw spinach.

I can't get enough of non-creepy platonic love. :)

I find baking to be...very cool. Especially in the area of bread from your standard loaves to more rustic types from the old country.

To be honest, I'm not much of a fan of kneading but I know it can be fun. :)

I prefer to use stretching and folding for dough, if relatively quick gluten development is necessary. If I have some time and if I want to develop more flavour, I use slow rise methods.

If you want to recapture some artisan bakery quality bread without having to actually go to an artisan bakery, I could point you to a few on-line resources for relatively easy baking tips. :)

Plus you can alter the amount you make for what you able to eat before it goes bad.

I am not good at making bread totally by hand, so I cheat and do it by machine. 8)

If you are eating lots of bread, make sure it is whole grain bread. White bread has next to no nutritional value, and tons of carbs. Nothing but empty calories.

I eat my food in sections (eat the baked potato, then the steak). Also, none of my food can touch on the plate. I don't want any cross-contamination of flavors.

Yup. The same goes for white rice. I love Basmati rice, though. Multi-grain bread is what I usually make and/or buy.

that habit drives me insane. my grandfather eats like that. I'm the opposite, put the ham in patatoes and gravy with corn and slap it on a biscut.

Cheesedogs and mayonaise, fishsticks and lemon juice, corn chex out of the box, Totinos party pizza and ranch dressing, always crave ice cream after drinking beer (yeah, bad idea...)

I can eat right, and usually do, but I think it's healthy to give in and have something greasy and sugary once in a while. Everything on moderation, but eat your veggies everyday! Helps to get all the bad stuff out, and puts the nutrients in.

Don't know how to make it, but I do agree that there's nothing like homemade bread!
