It was awesome, but I couldn't help but feel that a lot of things in the movie was allready in some other movies (Matrix, Aliens, Star Wars (the living planet was similar to the idea of Zonama Sekot))...
I saw it in 3D, it was worth every penny.

(I hope that one day, the Star Wars Expanded Universe would be made with similar graphics)

Avatar is an amazing visual specticle alright, but storywise its just a rehash of Dances With Wolves with a more hardline ecologiacl message.

I loved the movie. Saw it in iMax 3D and boy was it a specticle. Sure the story wasn't original, but visually it was awesome!

I disagree. The non-sentient creatures, mechs/vehicles, and the environment itself were all awesome, but once the thrill of the visuals wears off, I found it dreadfully boring. It may just be me, but it probably could've just been a mock-documentary of some alien planet, like how Discovery Channel had the Darwin IV special (which I think was called simply "Alien Planet").

And furries. Goodness gracious, why are the natives blue cat-people when every other creature has six legs, four eyes, and gills? I just could not take them seriously. District 9 did well with their... prawn... aliens. (too well, perhaps; it pains me to call them "prawns", it somehow sounds racist)

Why are we soft pink/brown bipeds when every other creature has more than four legs and gills? ;;)

I think what Noideaforaname's statement meant was the fact that there was no direct connection of them with any other animal to signify their evolution. We evolved from primates, which is evidenced by the highly-similar body structures. If they had evolved from those primates on their planet, then what happened to the other pair of arms?

Anyways, I do agree that the visuals of this film were amazing and another step forward in CGI. However, I do not feel this movie is a movie that I will purchase nor watch again unless it is when it comes to TV and nothing else is on. I tend to focus on films that shock me, which is not an easy feat. Avatar was very predictable for almost every moment from start to finish. Every "turn of events" could easily be seen ahead of time that it didn't really make me have a true interest in the film. Again, I am not saying that it is a bad film because it was pretty good, but I certainly will not be thinking about it outside of this post.

I liked it I thought it was pretty awesome and for once wasn't ruined by the 3D effect.

While I don't think it's that groundbreaking "cinema will never be the same again" movie everybody seems to make it out as, I do want to see more of it and can't wait to see the sequels.

But this at least justified the hype it had other than that other super hyped fail movie (Cloverfield).

Now bring on Alien 5 already.

I really enjoyed the movie. The action was AWESOME! Tingling in my hands and feet awesome (although that might just be a seizure warning....)

The plot was a bit predictable, but I like this kind of predictability. It wasn't a "where the heck did that come from?" plot twisty movie. It was a "I saw that coming and it's soooo cool and I'm pretty smart" kinda predictability.

As for the xenobiology, tru, the catfolks seemed like the only bipeds. The banshee had four limbs, but looking at the "phoenix," it looks like there was a 3rd set of limbs that atrophied. Also, the catpeople had only one "docking port" where every other creature had two.

This seemed to intersect with alot of the scifi I've read. (Lots of Niven, Card, Pohl, Asimov, etc.) If the planet relly was actively intelligent, it would only need one life form for every niche. We only have one type of red blood cell. Each life form is like a tissue. The catpeople are like the planet's transmission/sensory nerves. I don't know if I'm explaining it right...

Check out the later books in the Ender's saga by Orson Scott Card, before the Bean interquels.

So, being a highly specialized tissue, the catfolk have no close cousins. We see large and small herbivores, carrion-eaters, a large land carnivore, land symbiotes for the cats, aerial symbiotes for the cats, and a large aerial predator. Oh and a tiny pollinator? One critter for each major role. It's not an ecology, it's an organism.

Oh yeah, there was that monkeyfrog thing in the very beginning. That could be a cousin to the catfolk. They just evolved away from the 6 libs like the banshee did.

Yeah, that's the movie I was thinking of when I was watching it, but couldn't remember the name of. And it certainly isn't the only movie, nor will it be the last with the whole "stranger tries to assimilate into the tribe with intent of doing his duty only to fall in love and have to make a morally hard decision and so on ".

I liked the CGI but I did notice it get a bit lazy in parts.

Going into it, I did not think I would like the movie much. It totally blew my mind, I thought the 3d was incredible. I too found the plot predictable, but I was too caught up in how good of a movie it was to really care.

It was a typical Cameron movie..Larger than life and enjoyable to the end..I would have liked a bit more back story on some of the characters but the astounding visuals sealed the deal..Worth the hype and the 3hrs :P

Same here.

On a related note, the movie hasn't even been out for a whole month, and it's already made $1.1billion. That means it's the second highest grossing movie of all time. In less than a month. Since the highest grossing movie of all time was Titanic, James Cameron now owns two Olympic-sized swimming pools filled with money.

I enjoyed the whole thing. The plot was pretty predicable, but it was good. The 3d was great. Some of the visuals were great. Some, not so much. I have seen it twice. If another of my friends wants to go see it I will galdly go with them. Good entertainment.

My review of Avatar

(SPOILERS!!!)I just got back from seeing this movie, and I felt inspired to do a writen review on it. PS: Im gonna be referring to Transformers ROTF alot in this review. First off, this movie sucked ass HARD! I mean they totally ripped off a whole bunch of movies with no respect at all! These writers deserved to be strangled! Naw Im just kiddin, this is one of the greatest movies EFFOR!

I swear, Avatar and Transformers ROTF are tied as my two favorite movies of all time! This movie had some amazing battle scenes towards the end! But the forest fight with the giant robots is still the best battle sequence of all time! Of course the battle scene in the forest with giant robots in Avatar I mean! Naw, just kiddin again. But ROTF's forest battle is still my fave out of the two. I went into this movie expecting greatness from beginning to end! Boy was I dissapointed. Yes, this and TF ROTF are tied as my favorite movies of all time, but this movie starts off drasticaly slow. By half of the movie I was saying to myself "you know, it's an ok movie, better than GI Joe, but both of the Tf movies are still better. But I better not judge it until the final battle" and I was right not to judge it! After the humans blew up the giant tree, the rest of the movie was just a frekkn thrill ride! Transformers ROTF started out with big action all the way through and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

I saw this movie in 3-D and the special effects were good. Not great or bad, just good. I thought Transformers ROTF had better CG, but this one had more of it, plus it was in 3-D. For a time ROTF was considered (by me) the most heavily CGI based live-action movie ever (besides Spy Kids 3-D), but this movie stole that from ROTF. The plot was good, and I know Im gonna get ALOT of hate for saying this, but I thought the plot in ROTF was better. YEAH, THATS RIGHT! I SAID IT! The plot in ROTF is BETTER than the plot for Avatar! In ROTF I could actually follow everything that was going on, unlike every one else. This movie I was confused from time to time, and it totally riped off Matrix with the switching bodies thing. So yeah, send in the hate messages! Ill gladly take them!In conclusion, Avatar is a great movie! It got to be a darker movie towards the end, the end was a mother f*kin all out blood bath! Humans slaughtered EVERY ONE! (MAJOR SPOILER) Only 3 major characters survive. And that is bullshit. And when the bullshit man says thats bull ****, THAT is bullshit! (PS: Im not the bullshit man) But yeah, Avatar is an overly AWSUM movie! Go see it if you havent! There were only like 10 people in the theater tonight (in Avatar). So I give this movie 10 of 10 stars. As I gave Transformers ROTF Neither one of them are perfect movies, but what is? NOTHING!

Avatar might be rehashing an old story to some of us, but there's a whole new generation of people for whom it IS a new story... people who have never seen Dances With Wolves. We watch Avatar and say "Hey, this is a lot like Dances With Wolves in space." Someday, when they see Dances With Wolves, they will say "Hey, this is a lot like Avatar on Earth." The story is still relevant, and as long as humans continue to act like humans it will continue to be relevant.

Avatar is the perfect example of pure allegory disguised as a creative work. The story is also cliche and derivative with little ingenuity in any of the aspects.
