I can now confirm that Steve "Dr. Death" Williams lost his battle with cancer last night, as he passed away at the age of 49. I know the cancer came back this year and his health had worsened in the last few months. No other details on the death are available at this time.

Williams was considered one of the top wrestlers in the world during the late 80s and early 90s. He formed two of the world's best tag teams with the late Terry Gordy and with Ted DiBiase Sr., as well as a notable team with current WWE Vice President of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis. He was in particular a major star in the 90s for All Japan Pro Wrestling. He was recruited into pro wrestling by Bill Watts and was the 1982 Rookie of the Year. Watts discovered him at the University of Oklahoma, where he was a star lineman on the football team and a four-time All-American heavyweight wrestler. Many of his peers in wrestling over the years had believed if he had not played college football and concentrated on wrestling, that he would have been a strong candidate for an Olympic gold medal in 1984 or 1988.

On behalf of everyone here on the website, I want to sent our condolences along to the family, friends and fans of Steve Williams.

I met him once at a mid south event years ago and he was a damn nice guy.

Wow, how many wrestlers will die young? He was one of my favorites as well. I really thought he had kicked the cancer, that's a shame.

Wow, that's disappointing. Never really got to be a fan, but a few times I saw him he was pretty good. And '82 Rookie of the Year? That's the year I was born. :( He was also a reason Stone Cold became who he is. As some of you may know, Stone Cold Steve Austin's real name is Steve Williams, but when he started out in Texas he couldn't use it because Dr. Death was working there and he already had that name. That was the first piece of the legacy of Stone Cold.

To be honest the only time I got to see him was when he had a stint in WCW in the late 90s. He was still pretty solid in the ring and had some good matches and feuded with one of my favorites(Vampiro). The story line was beyond fun. I'm talking about the Oklahoma gimmick if anyone remembers it. Dr Death was Oklahoma's enforcer pretty much.

Sad to see another one go.

Like original sin, my exposure to Steve Williams was during his time in WCW. I honestly have vague memories of him now. I never watched him live because at the time I was heavily into pro wrestling, he was out of the ring so I watched taped videos of his work mostly.

It's definitely a sad thing to see another pro wrestler pass away but at the same time, I take comfort in that Mr. Williams didn't die due to the darker lifestyle of pro wrestling. Too often we see people in the industry go down a negative path due to the difficulties of the the work that they loved so much but also seems to do so much harm to them.

Sympathies to his family.

He was one of my big favorites back in the day. The Oklahoma Stampede just killed. Anyone remember the international tag tournament that he and Terry Gordy competed in? I remember him catching Ricky Steamboat off the top rope and doing what Jim Ross called a vertical Stampede; it looked like a running spine buster. Those were the days, those were the days.
