Iron Man 2 (spoilers to be had!)

Just got back from seeing it today.

Bloody awesome!

Robert Downey Jr once again excels as Tony Stark.
Gwyneth Paltrow actually seemed a little disappointing this time round as Pepper Potts.
Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes just didn't work for me. Much preferred Terrence Howard.
Mickey Rourke I felt did a good job as Ivan Vanko/Whiplash. The Whiplash Iron Man armour however just did nothing for me.
Scarlett Johansson was great as Natasha Romanov, once she put the Black Widow outfit on she really looked the part.
Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, I dunno, it worked first time round, this time however he seemed too cheerful, not something I see Nick Fury as.
Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan was well done.
And rounding out was Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, the whole relationship between Stark and Hammer was just rushed, they obviously knew each other but Hammer came across as a spoilt brat for hating Stark simply because of one public humiliation.

Oh and don't blink or you'll miss the Stan Lee appearance.

The War Machine armour looked fantastic, much better than the Iron Man suits.

And yes, you need to sit through the awfully long credits for the one final scene.

Massive

Just got to see it today. Very cool.

Massive SPOILERS, if you haven't seen it, avert your eyes.

Yes, the Whiplash / Titanium Man armor wasn't really up to par. I mean he's the main bad guy, and they dispatch him in less than 3 minutes.

Cheadle as War Machine left a little to be desired. I mean, he just came off as annoying everybody including Stark rather than protecting him. But the Armor was awesome.

All the extra deal with his arc reactor poisoning him was a little unnecessary.

Anybody else get a Walt Disney vibe from Howard Stark's little video deal, and his "City of Tomorrow"? Even the half sitting half standing on the desk pose, is a trade mark Disney pose.
The new element hidden in his theme park design was also a little over the top. And it was completely predictable.

I also found Fury a bit out of character, he was making too many jokes.

The extra scene at the end that ties this to the next Marvel flick was pretty cool. Mjolnir looked a little plasticky though.

All in all a pretty cool movie. Definitely worth watching.

Not a spoiler just a heads up, the infamous captain America Shield easter egg from the first movie makes a dead on look-here-it-is-in-your-face cameo appearance. You can't miss it this time.

I would have thought the location beneath my name would have been obvious. :P

Agreed.

Burn wrote:Gwyneth Paltrow actually seemed a little disappointing this time round as Pepper Potts.

True, but to be fair almost all of her scenes were with RDJ who dominates the screen. She didn't really have a chance.

Burn wrote:Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes just didn't work for me. Much preferred Terrence Howard.

I really didn't get any sense of friendship between Tony and Jim. If I were new to the fanchise I would have just thought Rhodes was just another Airforce Colonel with little connection to Stark.

Burn wrote:Mickey Rourke I felt did a good job as Ivan Vanko/Whiplash. The Whiplash Iron Man armour however just did nothing for me.

Rourke was great, he should have gotten much more screen time but I do agree the suit was a little meh. After Iron Man and War Machine just took out a legion of drones it just didn't seem too much of a threat.

Burn wrote:Scarlett Johansson was great as Natasha Romanov, once she put the Black Widow outfit on she really looked the part.

Though I could watch Scarlett smoulder on screen all day I felt Black Widow didn't really need to be in the film. Sure she was good whilst on screen but in a film that tries to pack so much in Widow would be one of the things I would have sacrificed.

Burn wrote:Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, I dunno, it worked first time round, this time however he seemed too cheerful, not something I see Nick Fury as.

I thought SLJ brought out Ultimate Fury very well. If classic Fury was what you were looking for I can see why you'd be disappointed but in the Ultimate version did have a different character.

Burn wrote:Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan was well done.

Agred. I would have liked to see at least a spark between Happy and Pepper though.

Burn wrote:And rounding out was Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, the whole relationship between Stark and Hammer was just rushed, they obviously knew each other but Hammer came across as a spoilt brat for hating Stark simply because of one public humiliation.

Rockwell did a good job with Hammer, although it did feel as if he was trying to channel RDJ a little uncomfortably at some points, notably when he's first presented with Rhodes' armour.

Burn wrote:The War Machine armour looked fantastic, much better than the Iron Man suits.

The War Machine armour looked great. The only problem I had with WM was that it was an older model than Stark's piloted by someone with no experience yet it beat Iron Man so easily. Shouldn't it have only worked for Stark and his arc reactor anyway?

In my opinion the only real flaw in this sequel was that it tries to cram so much in with mixed success. As previously said the whole reactor poisoning could have been thrown out to make room for fleshing out other story/characters.
Overall I really enjoyed Iron Man 2 but I think the first was still the better film.

Anyone else notice the absence of the 'You complete me!' scene from the trailers?

Oh, I forgot possibly the biggest news from the film. No Tony Stark in the Avengers?

I don't really know how to interpret the conversation between Fury and Stark at the end. Its either a clever way of not requiring Robert Downey Jr. to appear in the Avengers film whilst still being able to get Iron Man in there, or its just a way of adding intrigue to it.

I hope they keep Robert Downey for the Avengers film though.

I think it's a way out of paying half a dozen actors RDJ's demand for Avengers. If there are 6 people carrying the film they'd obviously all want to work for top billing wage, assuming RDJ is being paid what he's worth, that'd amount to quite a lot. Personally I think they'd go for War Machine now.

Yes! I'm guessing it was meant to be at the start before his entrance to the expo.

I liked that scene too.

How about this, instead of posting exclamation points you could have explained. That is why I posted question marks.

Thanks.

Fury tells Stark he failed the assessment Widow compiled on him and although he wants Iron Man he considers Stark a liability and doesn't want him. He requests Stark act in a consulting capacity (cameo) to which Stark agrees.

Hmmm... This makes no sense as Iron Man is a founding member of the Avengers.. War Machine??
I guess we will have to wait to find out.

I put my theory in the Thor discussion. the-hammer-has-fallen-first-image-of-movie-thor-released-t65271.php
edit- no I didn't, it's in this thread. #-o
Did you also notice how punctuation was more effective when preceded by words? ;)

As I interpreted from the movie, Stark himself didn't pass the Avengers-test, while Iron Man did, but Fury gave Stark a job offer as advisor for the Avengers - I think that doesn't mean IM won't be in the Avengers.

The Legend wrote:Anyone else notice the absence of the 'You complete me!' scene from the trailers?

You mean the scene before Stark drops from the plane to arrive at the stadion? It was weird, but it would be an interesting strategy in te future to make trailers some kinda prequels for the actual movies.

It's probably a good exit strategy if RDJ doesn't sign on for a large role in Avengers. At least it's already explained away.

It's not terrible, but I thought it was rather flat. There are too many sub-plots and most of them don't really reach much of a conclusion. Rourke was great, but I think he should have been given more to do, he's a lot more interesting than Rockwell's character. Aside from Whiplash's first appearance most of the action is either silly (the party fight) or kind of generic. Maybe I was having an off day or something but I imagine quite a few people will find this a little disappointing, hopefully I'll be wrong.

Scenes from trailers and commercials rarely are indicative of what ends up in the final product.

I havent seen the movie yet, but I plan on seeing it tomorrow hopefully, but where in the hell are these people getting this BS about "the magic that the first one had"? I've seen people say that the first one suprised them and was more than they expeced, but I havent read 1 Ironman comic and I still knew what was going to happen next. there wasnt a moment that kept me guessing or on the edge of my seat (Except for that one part where Ironman went to Gulmera [or what ever it was] and beat the crap out of those terrorist guys.) Other than that, it was obvious. Not that I didnt like the movie, just want to know where people are coming from.

I noticed that about most of RDJ's recent movies. Sherlock Holmes had a bunch of stuff in the trailer not in the movie.

the thing the 1st one had on this one is the "reveal" scene. it may not be PC, but the moment iron man lit the people on fire in the 1st one had me cackling in laughter at the top of my lungs for 10 minutes in the theater. i literally almost passed out laughing.

this didn't come close to that
