Hugo Weaving, best known for his "evil" roles as Mr Smith from The Matrix and the voice of Megatron from the recent Transformer movies, is set to take on another evil role, that of The Red Skull, the fictional "right hand man" of Adolf Hitler and arch-nemesis to Captain America.

Is there going to be a blockbuster movie franchise Hugo Weaving hasn't starred in? Last month, we told you that Marvel Studios was negotiating with Weaving, who was its first choice to play the Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger.

Today, Marvel announced that it had officially signed Weaving to be Hitler's right-hand man.

Weaving will appear in the highly anticipated movie opposite Chris Evans (as Captain America) and Hayley Atwell (as World War II French Resistance fighter Peggy Carter). The First Avenger will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteered to participate in the experimental program that turned him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Weaving, who was last seen in The Wolfman, has appeared not only in the Matrix and Lord of the Rings films, but also in Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as the voice of Megatron.

The film will be released in the U.S. on July 22, 2011.

I like the casting, and we know he can pull off the menacing attitude the Red Skull need.

I think Hugo Weaving is a great pick for the Red Skull. I heard the rumors a while ago, I'm glad it was confirmed today!

Let's hope for a CGI head like in Ghost Rider instead of rubber mask like the last Red Skull.

Hugo is awesome as a badguy so this might be pretty cool.

Would you settle for a CGI rubber mask?

I'm glad to read that Weaving got the part. I think that he could do a great job as the Red Skull. I wonder if he'll refer to Captain America at any point as "Mr. Rogers"?
