Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the Avatar. I thought both the new Batman movies, both Ironman movies, and the new Star trek film were about five time better. Even in just the story alone. I don't understand what people saw in the movie and it made more money then all the movies I list combined. Good thing I waited till it was lent to me on blue ray or I would have been pissed.

I never got to see it in 3D, so I have no idea what all the hype for this movie was for.
My only real beef with this movie is how damn (Native American) human-like the, uh, sentient aliens were. I get that we were supposed to connect with them, but (and I hate comparisons) District 9 had a similar-ish theme and it had prawn-like aliens.

When i saw the kickass Marines with the robots i thought movie was going to live up to the hype.....
I was severly dissapointed, and while watching the movie, the predictable story that was developing i stopped watching it. I was watching a bootleg copy anyhow so I started messing around on my lap top and just had the movie on for background noise.

The plot description sounds like Pocahontas with blue people...

Avatar was ok. I like James Cameron's other films, and the film will probably hold up to repeat viewings.
But there is one thing I can't believe made it into the movie: Unobtanium. I mean, are they serious with that name? It sounds like the kind of name a parody movie would use, not one with a galaxy wide budget. Then once the company(or whatever) gets the Unobtanium, it has no bearing on the end of the story. Heck, one could argue it barely even moves the story along, as they could have just bulldozed their way in from the begining instead of trying to negotiate for the stuff. Essentially, a poor McGuffin in my opinion.
Also, would seeing it in 3D really have made that much of a difference? I've never seen a movie in 3D, does it make things that much more immersive?

Can't say one way or the other. Have no desire to see this movie really. I'll wait for the REAL Avatar to hit July 2nd

Avatar was extremely overrated. When I first saw it, I thought it was the greatest movie ever, then I saw it again and it was crap. Its just a parody of a bunch of other movies, The matrix, Star Wars etc. The CG didnt look anywhere near as good as people where saying. And the acting isnt anywhere near as good as people where saying. Transformers ROTF should have won best CG because it was so much better than Avatar's.

If you went to a good theater, the 3d effects were incredible. I was mostly won over by that alone, and the pretty scenes.

I thought it was just a rip off of Dances with Wolves or whatever.
The CGI was okay. I didn't see in 3D because I hate 3D movies, and think they're really over rated.
It wasn't terrible. But it wasn't anything that should win awards. It was also too long.
Star Trek I liked. A lot.

I have still not seen Avatar. I have no desire to see it either. I am too cheap to buy an HD TV, so there is really no need to watch it. I did want to watch it, but I decided to pass when everyone wrote/said that is basically a new, modern interpretation of the same old Cowboys and Indians story that has been told a 1000 times. It really does nothing to pique my interest.
I have also not seen Star Trek, but I do want to see that. I have heard pretty good things and I love the franchise anyway, so it is one that I need to make the time to see.

The star of it plays Murdock in the A Team movie and said there are plans for a sequel to District 9.

I'm a big fan of Star Trek. Have been since I was a kid. I've been absolutely captivated by the Starship Enterprise and it's crew since I was 3.
That being said, I enjoyed the reboot, but I saw glaring errors from beginning to end. (And not with the rebooting of the story, I knew a new take was coming, so I was prepared. The errors were with the writing itself. Orci & Kurtman are a bit hackish....)
So, I'm not so wrapped up in it that I can't say "Oh no, Trek can do no wrong!"
With all of that in mind, I can honestly say that Avatar was visually stunning and way ahead of it's time and blew Trek and TransFormers out of the water.
But the story and the rest of the film, including the ideas in it?
Bland, boring, and overused. It was, without a doubt, one of the most boring experiences I've had in watching a movie. I've even sat through Meet Joe Black, and I still found Avatar to suck, like a nuclear powered Hoover.
Trek wins by a long shot simply because it entertained, both visually and storywise.
Avatar, once you get past the beautiful wrapping, you find out is no present, but merely a lump of coal from the pissed off Santa of Hollywood, punishing you for all the good movies you have enjoyed.

I didn't see Avatar in the theatres, but I've got to say I really liked it when I finally did see it.
The hype machine was just killing me, and I watched it with all intent for malice and to just disparage the hell out of it afterwards, but I ended up really liking it. Not like it's the best movie ever, and it certainly does have it's flaws, but here's my two pennies....
Sure, it's a wildly overtread story. And it doesn't even make any attempt at covering the fact that it's a wildly overtread story, and it's a story that I felt was presented in a pretty aggrivating way at times. But, by the time you saw the movie, even if you saw it on opening night, you must have known what the story was going to be because it had already been hyped to death, so it probably shouldn't have come as much of a surprise. Then again, like I said in the beginning, I only saw this after it was out on DVD for like three weeks, so I got to hear about it longer than you would have had you seen it on opening day, so that may not apply. But what story isn't overdone, really? The Transformers films have overdone stories as well: bad guy/imminent danger to unsuspecting/innocent populus/individual, heroes arrive, battle ensues, day(s) saved. So, I mean, there's nothing new under the sun is all.
I thought the graphics were great to be honest, and for me at least, after a few minutes of seeing large blue animal people, I think my brain fooled itself into thinking that it was more realistic looking than it really was. Not nearly as real as District 9, 'cause that was really real. The machinery was much more realistic looking than any of the organic stuff was, and I thought the animals were cool.
Unobtainium? Yeah, very stupid. I had the subtitles on when I was watching it, and I was just praying that they wouldn't pronounce it 'un-obtainium' but give it some cooler/less stupid pronounciation, but that was not to be had.
In the end, I found Avatar entertaining, and it was neat to look at too.
Star Trek, I liked also, but I'm not really a Star Trek fan. I saw all the old movies with my dad, becuase he liked them, and I saw the new one with my girlfriend becuase she wanted to. That said, a Star Trek movie has never let me down. Except Generations. I didn't like that one.

I would say Avatar was the better than Star Trek 11 in terms of story, cast, and special effects.
Star Trek 11 was just a typical summer sci-fi action movie not good and not bad either, but it's more overrated than Avatar.
Avatar had an important message, Star Trek 11 did not, which is what the best Star Trek movies and TV shows had.

What important message? Go green? Thats bullshit!

Why should we care about the enviroment? By the time earth explodes from littering we'd all be dead anyway.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "bullshit". I haven't even watched the damned movie and I think there is a little more to it than "go green". It is going to be the whole manifest destiny, white man versus indians story.
Anyway, I finally got to watch Star Trek. I was happily entertained. It wasn't perfect, but it was a good movie. I certainly didn't think I wasted my time watching it.
I still have no interest in watching Avatar. It just looks boring as hell to me. I didn't have any interest in watching it when I first saw the trailers, and the feeling is still there. It doesn't matter how high-tech a movie is visually if it doesn't involve subject matter that appeals to the viewer.

More overrated than Avatar? Maybe it's me being bombarded with all these disturbing 'make yourself an Avatar' ads or having to spend several months with some fanatics who believed Avatar to be completely flawless and in no way similar to Pocahontas, but I disagree.

The Avatar had a message just not a good one. I hate movie's that have a message. Please don't preach to me in your movie's and how the hell do some Indian's with spears beat Marines with guns and tech suits? In Avatar two the marines come back and drop a bomb on the plant. The movie really sucked, I thought it was made for kids. The hole sticking there head-wiener in the animals was just retarded. Come on they worshiped a tree. They won the war with over grown rhinos and you think that was better then the new Star Trek.

I like both, I see that Avatar is a mosaic cut from other movies, but still, it was better than the sum of its parts. A good summer blockbuster, worthy of seeing it in a theater in 3D.
As for Star Trek: it would be an excellent movie, if there would be a continuation for it - but for now, it just floats in the air, like any other "what if" episodes of ST... Meh, it was still better than Generations (I hate that movie for killing Kirk in a lame way...)
