SUV Question

This question is for those of you that drive and own an SUV, specifically a Jeep Liberty or an FJ Cruiser.
I'm Looking for a medium sized off road capable SUV.
Both of these offer full 4x4. And Judging by the reviews good off road handling.
So the question to those who own these SUVs is how good are they on the road, and highways. As Its not only going to be the off road car, but since I'm selling my every day car, It'll have to take on those responsibilities.
I know fuel econ is not that great on either of them, but well I guess I'll have to compromise on some things.
If you have any other suggestions I'll hear them out.
