First of all, not really. Sorry for the bait-and-switch subject line to get you in here.

Anyway, maybe you heard a few days ago that scientists discovered a planet, now called Gliese 581g, so like Earth (in fact, almost identical) that we could actually live there, though it's 20 light years away, which is unreachable by our technology today.

Now, today, scientists announced they are almost positive that there is life on this new planet. Check it out here!

Too bad there is no intelligent life on this planet that gives a damn.

I dont have the attention span to read it all, but I read most of it. What kind of life is it? I hope its able to blow stuff up. I've always wanted to be in an intergalactic war, even though it'd probobly be hell while its going on.

It's not confirmed yet, the scientists analysing the data they have about the planet believe that there is life on it, based on it's position to the sun and the planet itself being almost exactly like earth. But it's not confirmed yet, that will take a while.

I personally think it's pretty awesome and am also sure that there is some kind of life on it, well it has plant life that's for sure.

Speak for yourself. The fact that we found an alien planet that MIGHT have life on it is pretty damn exciting.

You actually want to be massacred by aliens?

Once again, speak for yourself. You may be shocked to learn that there are currently 6.8 billion free-thinking humans on this planet. Just because you don't like some people doesn't mean our entire species is "stupid."

Exciting stuff, but disappointing that we can't really do anything about it yet. No colonies or landings or expeditions; even "simple" radio contact with any ETs (assuming we somehow are able to do so) would be like telephone tag with 20+ year intervals.

I thought I was the only person who realized that! I'm so happy I'm not alone! This is why I never talk to people, you never know whats going to happen. Destruction and voilence is humanity's only intrests. Self serving and nothing more. People are so happy and content with believing that thyre are the only thing that exists or matters, when somewhere out there in the universe some one or somthing is suffering and unaware that their actions will be our greatest downfall. We're all doomed and no one wants to admit.

Sending and then receiving a message would probably take about 41 years. I think the article (or somewhere) said the planet was approximately 20.5 light years away. So if we send one, it'll take 20.5 years to get there, then another 20.5 years for them to respond.

But the article was optimistic about there being literally billions of other life-bearing planets around, so who knows? We might find a closer one.

I love this post. It's so funny to watch how you claim that all 6.8 billion humans on the planet think the exact same thing.

Even funnier is how people say "Humanity is a bunch of idiots" or "humanity is a bunch of violent psychopaths," without realizing that they are human.

I know I'm human and thats the point. Voilence is as natural as breathing, why do you think we have to be tought not to do wrong? Its human nature to do the wrong thing. And all 6.8 billion people arnt like that, just as a whole. If we could bee critisized by a different species they would say the exact same thing, wether they where just as bad or worse a fact is a fact.

And if we were criticized by an intelligent species they'd see that 6.8 billion sentient minds do not all think the same thing.

While this is exciting news, I'm concerned that we're limiting our definition of "life". They're so busy looking for life as we know it on Earth (based on carbon and using H2O as a working fluid) that were probably missing a myriad of other lifeforms, possibly even in our own solar system.
I honestly believe we'll find living creatures on (or more precisely in) Europa, and possibly in Jupiter as well. There was probably life on Mars at one point too, though I wouldn't expect anything too complex to have evolved before the big freeze, and I don't think we'll find anything other than microbes now.

I've wondered about that myself. There's no telling what kind of lifeforms could evolve from an environment that's so vastly different from our own.

Exactly people just seem to assume that life can only exist on a planet like earth, in the same exact position to the sun as earth. Didn't they already find life on Titan?

Not quite. The atmosphere (other than the temperature) resembles what Earth's looked like several billion years ago, and we're already proved all you need is UV radiation or electrical energy and amino acids will start forming under those conditions. Also (much like the end of 2010), when the Sun becomes a red giant, Titan will be in a good position to warm up and possibly become more habitable.

In any event, nothing we've sent to Saturn had the equipment to look for life, so it's an open question whether anything's on Titan at this time.

A single person is smart and kind. Groups of people (even those that I agree) with shared views are basically stupid as a whole.

History has proven this again and again.

It's not so much life can't crop up just about anywhere, it's just that we know it's worked for one planet so logically similar planets would have good chances at developing life.

I'm with ya, Cyberstrike, I really am.

"There are currently 6.8 billion free-thinking humans on this planet".

No.

Most of us are just sheep, following the NWO agenda. Just my opinion...I have no idea where I am in the grand scheme of things...

Can't we just talk about Transformers? How did this discussion come to this?

And once again you come through with nothing but generalizations and no proof.

Well, maybe Anon, but Anon is more of a loose association of people forming what I can only describe as Entropy Incarnate.

And now, an odd little twist to the story:

Following the Sept. 29 announcement of the discovery of Gliese 581g, astronomer Ragbir Bhathal, a scientist at the University of Western Sydney, claimed to have detected a suspicious pulse of light nearly two years ago, that came from the same area of the galaxy as the location of Gliese 581g, according to the U.K.'s Daily Mail online.

There does seem to be some question about this guy, however:
"I know the scientist, and when he first announced it, I asked him for the details, and he wouldn't send them to me," astronomer and SETI pioneer Frank Drake told SPACE.com. "I'm very suspicious."

Bhathal is also a member of SETI, FWIW.

Personally, I think Ragbir's trying to glom onto a little limelight for himself.
