Thundercats Headed for the Big Screen
Source: Variety
June 6, 2007

Warner Bros. has optioned a Thundercats script by new screenwriter Paul Sopocy to turn the popular 1980s animated series and toy line into a live action feature.

Variety says Warner-based Paula Weinstein will produce through her Spring Creek Productions, along with Dick Robertson and Lew Korman.

Thundercats revolves around a group of humanoid cats (with feline names like Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro and Cheetara) who must flee their planet of Thundera after it's destroyed. Once crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer, bent on killing them off.

Sopocy has written the script as an origin story expanding on the major heroes and villains from the animated series, with the plot focusing on Lion-O coming of age as the leader of the Thundercats.

Warner Bros. recently teamed with Joel Silver to produce a live-action He-Man movie, based on the toy and cartoon franchise, as well as a feature based on the DC comic book Teen Titans.

My nips just hardened. This makes me very happy.

As long as Michael Bay is not involved.

Awesome as hell.

Now lets hope they get a director who cares about keeping the movie close to the source material.

I'm sure you could make The Rock seem younger than Jackman or Diesel

He's not that much younger then Diesel.

It's only a 5 year difference between the Rock and Diesel and 4 between Jackman and the Rock.

It's a coming of age story so I really don't see the Rock being a reasonable choice

Age difference between actors really doesn't matter.

With proper costuming and acting, you could make the Rock seem over a decade younger than Jackman or Diesel.

They don't have to do this. Just give the cast of CATS! a bunch of swords.

Diesel's to young for panthro; Jackson would be much better.
Hopefully we'll get Carry or Depp for Snarll
Wonder who the'll get to play the kits :???:

Hmmm, lets see. Who could pull off the Thundercats....lets hope they make em cgi, lest it end up like the Dolph Lundgren He-man.

Lion-O - -shrug-
Panthro - if Ving Rhames or Michael Clarke Duncan learned ninja moves, they would be awesome as Panthro.
Tygra - Ewan McGregor
Cheetara - Angelina Jolie(she makes a good blonde, can act, and has big jugs, perfect for Cheetara)
Wily-Kit - some kid
Wily-Kat - some kid
Jaga - Sean Connery
Snarf - Frank Oz

Mum-Ra - Ron Perlman

Edit: Almost forgot. This movie will need Ro-bears Berbils.

Voices won't be a problem, they can just gather up a bunch of furbies in a recording studio, turn them on, and leave the tapes running for a week.

While I liked GI Joe, Thundercats were really lame to me even as a kid.

My feelings exactly.

What happened to making movies based off original ideas?

Well at least semi-original.
