THOR - Marvel Comics latest movie to open May 6, 2011

Didn't see a thread about Thor so I'm posting a link to the YouTube trailer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aymaqCbaik4

I think it looks like Marvel has another hit on their hand. It's got a great cast with Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins on board not to mention a talented director in Kenneth Brangh.

There have been 7 Marvel films open the first weekend of May and 6 of those have broken the $200m mark. Other stuidos seem to be aware of that or another similar statistic cause the following weekend sees no major challenge. Thor's third weekend will face off against Pirates 4 but by then Thor should've have found its audience and be cemented as a hit.

What do you guys think?

I am excited because this is just building up to the Avengers movie..
But so far Thor looks incredible (of course trailers can be deceptive).

I like what I saw in the trailer, especially Anthony Hopkins. I always thought he did really good with dramatic scenes, especially with speeches. Almost as good as Pacino. But I'm actually looking forward to the weekend before, when the 5th Fast and the Furious movie comes out. Saw the trailer, and it looked like a lot of fun.

I'm greatly releived is what I am!

I had heard rumours that they weren't going to use the whole "I'm really a norse god" bit, and the hammer and Thor's powers would be alien or sciency in origin. So I'm happy about things now.

Thsi is on my must see list of movies. Of course, a trailer will only ever show the best bits, hopefully the movie lives up to the trailer's promises.

Plus, lead up to the Avengers. I'm looking forward to that one!

Looks badass no doubt but i was a little put off by Thor's badly dyed beard and eyebrows.

Honestly! He looks like a Canary! They most certainly could have found a true blonde blue eyed actor that would fit the bill.

As far as i know the dude that's playing Thor is an unknown and not a box office draw so i think they could have found a more Nordic esthetically accurate actor that didn't require a dye job.

The guy playing him was in the new Star Trek playing Kirk's father at the beginning. After seeing it, I agree that it's obvious his facial hair is a dye job, but I think it'll be fine. I mean, if that's what puts you off about this movie...

Anyway, I remember Thor with and without a beard, so I wonder if he'll shave it, or if it'll wait until the sequel (or the Avengers).

Slightly related: I wonder if Iron Man 3 will nosedive like X-Men 3 did now that Jon Favreau isn't directing it...

No! Norse Mythology always made a point that Thor had a big badass beard. That's one of the things I didn't like about Marvel comics version, that he didn't have the Beard of Thor. He's also supposed to be a redhead but I'm willing to make SOME concessions here.

It's never a good sign, we know that much, but it depends on who's taking over.

Looks good. Much better than I was expecting. Should be a decent movie by the looks of it.

Marvel's Thor has very little to do with the myths, so be ready for the movie to have even less. Odin's the last person who would talk about "the horror of war" being undesirable.

And I thought they whole "space aliens who were worshiped as gods by the Norse" was confirmed?

Yeah, looking at the trailer, it looks like they are going the Aliens as Gods route.

Looks like it should be a good movie though.

Looks fantastic, i just hope the inevitable Avengers film doesn't ruin all Marvels good work, although Iron Man 2 wasn't very good IMHO

Oh good grief. White Power Group calls for a boycott of the Thor movie over the casting of Idris Elba as Heimdall.

All I can say is: these racists can kiss my ass. I don't think it will hurt the movie.

I thought that recently they had begun to delve deeper into the Norse myth for inspiration?

Regardless of where you are we are now inside the 25 day window for THOR!!
For some European locations it's even down to two weeks away!

My excitement for this film has been building for some time and I don't think I'm going to be let down based on the footage that's been coming out.

I'm excited but apprehensive about Thor. On one hand, Thor's awesome, but on the other hand, so much can go wrong.

Well, it's the same company as Iron Man and the good Hulk movie, so I have more faith than, say, Punisher: War Zone.

The more I see of this movie the less I like it. I've never been a big fan, but I've seen all the Marvel movies so far, so I might see this, if just for Anthony Hopkins.

I'm inclined to agree with you, if it weren't for the fact that Thor's concept is kinda out there compared to stories about a guy piloting a robotic suit and a modern-day Mr. Jekyll and Hyde. Letting Thor's concepts translate to a movie audience without compromising the source material requires some pretty artful storytelling and directing. Even the most talented people could screw this one up.

No matter what the reviews are, I'm going. Even if it's just to see the post-credits scene with Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye

Lucky for us they did get talented people and they pulled out a winner. Early reviews coming in at Rottentomatoes.com(for those interested in such things) have 14 to date. With 13 fresh and 1 rotten it has a 92% fresh score. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1197233-thor/

No doubt it'll likely fluctuate and probably be in the 80% range when it's done but it looks like summer is going to start on a good note!!

Saw it today. Good movie. Not as much fun as say Iron Man, but still fun and enjoyable.

Chris Hemsworth was great as Thor.

Ray Stevenson did a fantastic job as Volstagg, little slimmed down from the comic book version though but still bulky enough to do the character justice.

Josh Dallas had the look of Fandral absoloutely spot on.

And Hogun was ... Asian.

There is a scene right at the end after the credits (as per normal) which clearly sets up what The Avengers will be about. Clint Barton (he didn't have the Hawkeye outfit) is there, the scene is brief but you don't have to wait until the end to see him.

Stan Lee of course makes his cameo appearance.

"Stark" is mentioned.

There was a line about a "doctor who specialised in gamma radiation"

There may have been another easter egg but I missed it. As Thor is leaving the SHIELD compound he retrieves a diary, it's sitting on some other papers, missed what was written on them. Keep an eye out for it.

Probably the one aspect where they got things wrong was the Rainbow Bridge ... it's more of a Stargate!

Overall though they did a great job of bringing Thor to the big screen.
