What'd you all make of the ending of Inception?

I know the movie came out quite a while ago, but I looked for a thread about this here and didn't find anything. Anyway, I just saw Inception a few weeks ago, and I've got to say, between the great writing, great acting, great music, and great special effects, it was one of the best movies I've seen, at least lately. What did you think of the ending? Was it all a dream? Or were some of the scenes in the real world? I think it was not all a dream. The top looked like it was going to fall. Also, at least according to TV Tropes (link), Michael Caine said that all of his scenes are real. This was apparently confirmed by Christopher Nolan.

Oh, and just for fun:

I think it wasn't a dream because Leonado DiCaprio would discover the "imperfections and perfections everything that makes them unique" about his children. No architect could replicate the knowledge of a father

He Supposedly had his wedding ring on when he was under, and he did not in real life. He was not wearing the ring in that last scene. Some say that is his token, because the one he used was Mal's. But he was in the real world.

I think, because it was Mal's top, that it was a dream. The sheer fact that it was about to fall over makes everyone think that it was real. But it was also Mal's, and if she survived and somehow made it to reality, it would mean that she also knew the exact size and weight of the top, therefore rendering it useless. So it was a dream in my opinion.

I just saw this movie for the first time this weekend. My take on the ending...
It was the real world because his kids turned around to look at him. His regret of not being able to see their faces one last time was why he kept reliving that particular memory in his dreams.

As it was, the ending was well played to leave it ambiguous in such a way that we end up asking questions like this. :-$

I'm in the 'top fell' category.

I think he was in the real world. In the dream world, the top never wobbled. You can see it wobble slightly before it cuts to the credits.

I'm of the opinion that he is still dreaming. Think back earlier in the movie when he tests the new sedation drug. When he "wakes" he goes to spin the top on the sink and it falls off. We never see what it did. This is the real kicker that I think a lot of people missed.

Because of that, the ending could very well be a dream. He's exorcised his guilt over everything and that is why he is able to see his children turn around in the dream.

Regardless, I don't think Nolan intended there to be a concrete answer... Because he's a freakin genius.

I don't think I've ever wanted a spinning top to full over so badly in all my life! As a parent there's nothing worse than being parted from your kids.

Sequel anyone???????

In my opinion, it was still a dream, (maybe I have to re-watch it, but) as I remember the kids looked exactly the same as when he have last seen them (which is typical in dreams).

Totally agreed! the kids are always wearing the same clothes through out the movie even in the end. (i watched it twice to confirm) Which brings me to think he is still dreaming.

That was exactly my thought process as I watched it. It's funny, the film that the director and actors thought they made might indeed have a different ending than they intended....
