Old Anime Shows

I've always been somewhat of an anime fan (used to watch a lot of Speed Racer, Gundam, and Sailor Moon as a little kid [I'm not sure if Speed Racer really counts, or why I watched Sailor Moon in the first place...]), and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for some older shows. Two of my favorites are Gatchaman/G-Force/Battle of the Planets (whichever name you wanna call it) and Starblazers.

We don't count US animation outsourced to Asia "anime". This includes Transformers. Just so you know. ;)

I'm trying to remember the name of an old Voltronesque 80's anime that I watched as a kid. It had 3 heroes, two guys and a girl, who rode in 3 different vehicles that combined into one giant robot. I think the main hero's vehicle was blue, the girl's was red, and the other guy's was yellow. I remember the guy with the yellow vehicle was the comic relief of the show; he was always hungry and was usually eating a large sandwich at inappropriate times.

The only other parts I really remember was the tunnel they used to race through with their vehicles when they had to go save the day. Their HQ was located inside a mountain I think, and the rock had hidden doors that the vehicles would shoot out of.

Any help in identifying this show would be much appreciated!

Go Lion. It was edited, dubbed, and brought to the US as Voltron. The original is much better.

Macross. Edited and dubbed into the first part of Robotech. It's awesome. Southern Cross and Mospeda, the other two parts, aren't nearly as good, but try them, you might like them.

I think you might be thinking of Getter Robo?

The Macross franchise has quickly become my favorite anime. I've watched Do You Remember Love? like 30 times since I first saw it over the winter. Can't recommend it enough.

Not quite, Voltron is actually composed of three shows and toys lines:

HyakuJuuOh Golion = Lion Voltron
Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV = Vehicle Voltron
Kousoku Denjin Albegas = Gladiator Voltron

The last show was cancelled, but the toys were still released in the US.

A new English dub for Macross came out a couple years ago, without all the editing and changes they made for Robotech. I've been meaning to finish watching it, actually.

That was on Syfy just a little while ago. (And I mean that literally, it was on just a couple hours before I posted this) I wasn't watching it, I just kind of passed it off as an old anime in the vein of Robotech. Then I heard the words "Wave Motion Gun." Now, I've never seen Space Battleship Yamato before, but damn it if I don't recognize the ship or it's signature weapon when I see them. It's a shame I didn't realize that until nearly the end credits, I would have actually paid attention to it if I had known.
