Hollywood does this from time to time.

The year "Twister" came out there was also a movie released called "Night of the Twisters".

Not too long after the US Godzilla there was a movie released called Reptilian (originally called Yonggary in Japan)..

Reptillian isn't a rip off of Godzilla, its a remake of an older movie with the same name

This could explain where Sci-fi gets most of it's "Sci-fi original movies"

It is not a remake.
Shim Hyung Rae's monster movie Reptilian (also known as 2001 Yonggary) plays like a tribute (a low-budget, grade-Z tribute) to the classic Japanese monster movies of the fifties. General Murdock (Dan Cahman) must stop the destructive dinosaur before the president attacks it with nuclear weaponry.

It was originally released in Japan as Yonggary.

I know there was a movie released about the same time as US Godzilla that involved a large green lizard.

Why would that not be good for the viewers? Let's be realistic, anyone who buys "Transmorphers" or "Snakes on a Train" are walking into a wall with both eyes open. They deserve whatever mind numbing torture they subject themselves to.

Why?? Because it is crap movies and honestly if you are silly enough to buy them then yes you deserve whatever "mind numbing torture" you get from them.

That is why it is bad for the viewers, IMHO it is a complete waste of time.
