Battleship: So...that just happened [SPOILERS WITHIN]

So against my better judgement I went to see Battleship. I know, I know, it looks like crap but I'm a sucker for ship to ship combat and naval tactics. Anyway, a quick bullet point review.

1. Effects are stellar, but that's par the course.

2. Premise was the old hat alien invasion storyline but with the twist that the alien ships are no tougher than ours and have semi-realistic weaponry aside from the death wheel things. They move instead to cut off our military from the landing site (read: Hawaii) so they can safely send out a signal that Earth is ripe for invading. A decent enough change of pace given the material.

3. Characters are forgettable aside from Mick, a disabled veteran with prosthetic legs. Gets a surprisingly believable scene were he beats an alien in power armor senseless. Other than him I identified characters by trope rather than name (Hero, Hero's Girlfriend, Cowardly Scientist, etc).

4. Plot was simple at best. Nothing to write home about. Aliens sadly had no development and only existed to give the heroes something to blow up. Sucks cause some of their actions could have used further development and it leaves a lot of plot holes.

5. The only thing it had to do with Battleship the game was the alien "peg" artillery and the "com buoy" scene made to imitate the gameplay of the board game. The latter is amazingly not as stupid as it sounds.

6. The team of heroes are a joint American and Japanese crew, surprising for a pro-military blockbuster in the summer.

7. Slow to start, a bad thing for a film like this. Even when the aliens arrive there's about fifteen minutes before the battle starts. In before Transformers 2007 jokes. :P

8. Lacking annoying humor past the opening thankfully.

9. Has the usual "We can save the world by blowing something up" finale.

10. The final battle between the USS Missouri and the Mothership was admittedly badass.

Overall it was entertaining but nothing special. If you miss it you didn't miss anything worth noting. Helps pass the time between The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises at least. Feel free to add comments and criticisms of your own below.

Also, does Hasbro own the rights to Beyblades? I could have sworn those spinny spiked wheel of death...things were just like them.

At first I thought this was going to be totally lame. Looked like leftover footage from the TF movies. The more I saw footage of the battles, the more I thought of giving it a chance. So I'm gonna go see it on Tuesday. I wish it wasn't a lame-ass overused alien invasion flick, I would have preferred a fight between 2 Earth naval forces. But, it looks like a fun way to pass 2 hours.

And I'm looking forward to The Amazing Spider-Man much more than the Batman movie.

Mis was my favorite character. Its also worth noting that he really was a war veteran that lost his legs in in service. I Thought that was preety cool.

Before seeing the movie i was wonder how they were going to incorperate parts of the game into the movie. I thought the alien "missle pegs" were pretty clever, as was the screen with the tsunami buey's acting like markers to track the alien ships. Calling out the marker numbers and "Miss/hit" was pretty cool and one of the redeming facts of the movie.

For me the movie just dragged way to slow in the begining. The love story was poitless. They could have at least shown a little more cleavage 8-} .

Overall i think you hit it on the head. not not missing anything if you don't see it, and its a good way to kill time between the Avengers and Ted. (Sorry, other than the vehicles, TDKR just doesn't interest me much  )

Eh, I'm in agreement with you but for me it's Avengers and Prometheus. After the failure that was The Dark Knight* I'm not really too excited for The Dark Knight Rises.

*Yes, I just said the Dark Knight sucked. Bring on the hate mail!

For me, If it wasn't for the Joker, the Dark Knight wouldn't have been anything speacial. I was bored to death with Batman Begins as well. I have a strong feeling this movie isn't going to live up to all the hype enless somhow bane somehow live to Joker in TDK. We'll see. I wasn't impressed with the 6 minute proluge for TDKR as i was for TDK. Time will tell. maybe i'll eat my words when it comes out. I wasn't to impressed with The Avengers previews when i saw it either, but the movie went far above my expectations. We'll see

I've always said that I prefer a film that isn't art and doesn't try to be over a film that isn't art and thinks it is anyway. That's my problem with Nolan and the Batman films. At least films like Battleship are gleefully aware of what they are and give no fraks. That's why I can enjoy them along with more artful films.

I just saw Battleship and I was very pleasantly surprised. It was a hell of a lot of fun. More fun than The Avengers. Seriously. Personally, I enjoy war history, and more specifically World War II and Navy history. That's probably why I thought this was great. When "Thunderstruck" started and the old guys fired up the USS Missouri, I thought I was gonna blow my wad. The story was thin, but it was enough to give a reason for the action. And once the action started, it never let up. Great way to spend 2 1/2 hours. I'm getting this on Blu-ray for sure. There was not a single bad thing I can say about this film. Go see it.

Nope. Not even the Kool-Aid supplied by the critics that Battleship was horrible. Yes, I enjoyed this film more than The Avengers, even after seeing that film twice. Personal opinion. As I said in that film's thread, I went to see it as a general movie-goer, I'm not an Avengers fan. It was fun, no doubt, but I had a better time with this one.

I went and saw Battleship on the weekend, my expectations were low so it turned out to not be THAT bad. But far from great.

A few minor plot holes, ANNOYING LENS FLASHES (I hate them) and the soundtrack was done for the sake of there being a soundtrack. It was borderline cheesy. When they were moving the final missile I was expecting the theme from Rocky.

Still better than Gabriel, but nothing will ever be worse than that crap.
