Cloverfield is the cover name given to us by the makers of this film.

It won't be the real name of the film. (see my above post on the issue of "Blue Harvest")

Gotcha. Wasn't sure if it was the filmmakers giving it to us (don't read anything into that staetment) or if someone in the public came up with it. The question is, did they give it to us...

... from space?

J.J, Abrams trailer info

And another.

Thank god this was posted I have been looking for this thread since I got back online

When the trailer started I thought crap another boring movie(plus it was like the 10th trailer to be shown before the movie started)

when I heard the roar my interest was awoken

Some say its Voltron but its too early for that since there in the pre script phase it isn't Godzilla Sony owns the rights not Paramount.

I heard it was going to be a sea monster of some sort.I think the other clue to what it might be besides the roar is too see what happens to the head of the statue of liberty and one guy running throught the street says he seen it and its huge.

I also heard that the movie is shot all with camcorders to get the peoples point of view a Blair Witch concept that would look great in this kind of format.

Cloverfeild? Hell when return of the Jedi was being filmed in Yuma Arizona/The Sail Barge scene the movie was called Blue Harvest to throw off people who possibly would of showed up to see Star Wars being filmed

Personally i dont think the handheld camera format is going to work for such a huge monster movie, as huge monster movies require huge epic shots to get the sense of scale accross. You cant capture that on a handycam.

Analyzing JJ Abrams’ Cloverfield: Voltron, Godzilla, Lost, Gamera
Posted on Thursday, July 5th, 2007 at 12:32 pm by: Peter Sciretta

Now that the movie trailer for the top secret JJ Abrams produced monster movie (tentatively titled Cloverfield) has been unleashed on the world, a big faction of the internet refuses to believe that it’s just another monster movie. Much of the speculation around the fanboy circles points to either another American Godzilla movie or a big screen live action Voltron film. Before we explore those two theories, let’s take a look at what we supposedly know so far.

JJ Abrams is producing
Long time Abrams collaborator Drew Godard (Lost, Alias, Angel, Buffy) wrote the script
Matt Reeves (The Pallbearer) is attached to direct
The whole film will be shot from the POv of consumer handheld video cameras
The monster or alien is being referred to as a “parasite”
The City is New York City
In the trailer they throw a going away party for a young man going to Japan
There is a Godzillaish roar in the background which sounds a little robotic
At the end it says In Theaters 1.18.2008
The trailer was shot before principal photography
As far as we know, they have not begun principal photography
JJ Abrams Bad Robot production company is making the film for Paramount Pictures
Some people are pushing the Voltron theory based on the idea that at around one minute and twenty seconds into the trailer, one of the kids yells “It’s a Lion!” But the truth of the matter is, he says “ahhh! It’s alive, It’s huge.” There is no “lion” spoken in the trailer.

The Godzilla faction has used this misquote to support a theory that the movie features Monster Zero (King Ghidorah), a Godzilla monster that looks like a lion, comes from space and shoots fire balls. One thing is for sure, it’s not Godzilla himself because “It” comes from the sky and can throw/spit/produce fireballs. And we must all remmber that a 3D Gozilla is currently also in production.

Others have speculated that the movie might be a remake of Gamera: The Guardian of the Universe. Gamera uses a fireball weapon which seems to fit the action shown in the trailer. But Gamera is virtually unknown by the American audience, so what is the point of using/buying his name property?

The screenwriter for Voltron has said the battle takes place in Manhattan, and that the monsters have parasitic qualities which allow them to regenerate themselves by combining with metal debris. Voltron also fought parasite monsters in the series. However, the Voltron rights still belong to Mark Gordon Productions, and involves a crew of producers that are supposedly not involved in Cloverfield. Mark Gordon Productions is also not a production company under Paramount.

I can't believe so many people are falling for this word-of-mouth Hollywood mindgame.

Whatever the movie is, I can tell you one thing - it's not worth the effort people are putting into trying to figure out what it is. They only do this to get people curious, so that they'll confuse "being curious about a movie" with "thinking the movie looks good".

they tried to do the same thing with Titan A.E. - with a stupid trailer and marketing campaign that showed you next to nothing. But it backfired and nobody saw the film and it bankrupted the animation company that produced it... and, oh yeah, the movie sucked ass.

by this time next year everyone will be looking back and saying "man, I can't believe I was so excited for this movie when that freaky trailer came out... all of that excitement and it just turned out to be some stupid *blank* movie..."

...

It reminds me of that commercial for "Gabbo" in the Simpsons, anyone remember that? The commercial is just an announcer saying "Gabbo, Gabbo, Gabbo!" - nobody knows what it is, or what it's about, but everybody loves it for some reason...

... then they find out it's a puppet...

WAIT! I GOT IT!

"Cloverfield" is actually "Gabbo: The Movie"!!!

LOL..

Someone analyzed it.
It even has info about why it is not Godzilla.

:-B Biolante isn't a squid, it's a Hybrid made out of Godzilla DND, a rose and the sole of a dead girl. :-B

What no Godzilla till 2013! Noooooooooooooooo
I saw the trailer again and you'r right it says It's alive! Not Lion, well the new trailer was a better quality.
That rar still is a Godzilla rar, cos it sounds mechanikle, I use theterm Godzilla rar for mechanikle rars, ok?
But that thing with 2004 ace, lets me wonder, I don't know what happened back then that could have anything to do with a monstermovie, exept that was the year Godzilla Final Wars came out and it was Godzillas 5oth birthday! So maybe...
But on the other hand, it may not be anything to do with monsters, it could be anything and what we saw here is just a dream of the main carecter.
And I do hope it's not a nother american Godzilla, cos that Godzilla sucked.

A co worker and I said that with Abrams involved it would not surprise us if you really don't get a clear look at the monster, just blurry visions on the camcorders.

Yeah, that guy in that youtube got the Biollante info wrong..

Watch it turn out to be some generic monster and the "thrill" of the movie is the experience of everything through "a regular persons perspective"..

I'm 110% convinced that that's the case.

It's like The Blair Witch Project meets Godzilla.

Well, one monster movie is pretty much like all the others. You can only get so many original giant monster movies. Giant monster appears, destroy famous city, making sure to trash at least one major landmark, wash, rinse and repeat.

Whetever this "monster" is it has to be mechanical. Those things it fires into the air like missiles make me think this. If it was a monster then it could only i dunno, shoot out a fireball like Godzilla or a stupid beam of light like Gamara. These however get launched into the air, and then after a certain altitude they have a secondary firing stage, like a large firework, where they explode and split up into more smaller projectiles, which then as we see impact the buildings in the trailer.

Not to mention the fact that when they are flying through the air, you can hear the sound of some sort of propulsion system, like a rocket or as i already said a type of missile.

Its mechanical in at least some form.

What annoys me the most are the sound effects, they are all off. Lets see that explosion is a good 5 miles away right? In which case how comes we hear the sound of the explosion so soon? Shouldnt there be a delay because of the speed of sound? Same goes for the missiles when they explode into their second stage mid-air.

I think the handheld camera perspective of this film is a gimmick to downplay the trailer I dont think the film is gonna be entirely produced this way,I think its a smoke screen that JJ Abrams is using to gather interest for the film, but thats my opinion.

Woah dude you from Rochester?! I used to live there!

Anyway i agree because i dont think filming such a huge movie with a handheld camera would work. Like ive said a million times before, these sorts of movies require HUGE, epic shots and with such a huge creature on the loose they wouldnt be able to capture a sense of scale with a handycam.

I think its all just smoke and mirrors at this point, and im kinda hoping it is too because i dont want to watch a massive monster destroying new york through a handycam!

Titan A.E. and Gabbo. Those are great examples, but I keep thinking that the producers and marketing team of whatever this film happens to be got the idea from the amusement park episode of South Park.

I found this on the Sci Fi Channels news of the week section

Abrams Denies Cloverfield Sites

J.J. Abrams, who is producing the mysterious movie code-named Cloverfield, wrote Ain't It Cool News to deny that he had anything to do with the various Web sites popping up that appear to be viral marketing. The only official Web site is called 1-18-08, a reference to the film's release date and the only identifying information contained in the teaser trailer now playing with Transformers and online.

"Regarding the online stuff you posted: yeah, we're doing some fun stuff on the Web," Abrams wrote. "But, obviously, if the movie doesn't kick some massive ASS, who gives a rat's about what's online? So, as you can imagine, we're focusing mostly on THAT. For what it's worth, the only site of ours that people have even FOUND is the 1-18-08.com site. The others (like the Ethan Haas sites) have nothing to do with us."

Of course, Abrams has taken part in previous online campaigns of which he has disavowed knowledge, such as the so-called Lost Experience of last summer, an alternate-reality game that ultimately offered backstory on the ABC SF series.

He says 'It's alive, it's huge"

http://www.seibertron.com/forums/viewto ... =9545&sid= This is the thread that is discussing this..

I have listened and watched this trailer multiple times with headphones on and he does not say "it's a lion"..

They are not going to make a movie as "high profile" movie like Voltron or the Hulk with the perspective of hand held cameras...

so the whole movie is gonna be shot with a regular cam corder? another blair witch movie?

personally I hope they really aren't going to film it all with handheld cameras, we got enough shakey camerawork already with the big proffessional movie cameras, handheld are just going to make it 2 hours of moving blurs
