Combiner Wars Onslaught with the Cadet Team! ( Bruticus & Swindle Limbs )

Onslaught is a veteran sergeant at the :CON: Academy. He's training the soldiers in the art of war and combining! (His usual teamates are also teachers or something)

This is my first paid custom commission as part of ONE AWESOME TRADE that I did.

Pretty simple repaint, but I went the extra mile by giving the Swindles new heads to turn them into new characters.

Only onslaught kept his head because he remain Onslaught.

The vehicles work really well in the camo deco.

The new special heads fit perfectly in the vehicle modes.

The combined Bruticus with Cadets is pretty amazing. To paint the chestplate, I had to dissasemble Onslaught almost completely because it was more effective to spray paint. The finishing toutch is a "glow" :CON: from Reprolabels.

I even repainted Bruticus's eyes in a nice shiny metalic red. My poopy picture don't show it well.

I had fun doing this. Hope you enjoyed! ;)^

Really nice kanra! I like the theme of the piece, was that your idea?

I saw your trade in a different thread, that is one heck of a deal I must say.

That trade was pretty fair considering the ammounts I paid originally and for how much the figures go on Ebay. The CW figures that I customised were already his own figures that he got with my recommendations. I advised against Brawl because he suck, he don't like any CW jets and the copter is way too out of scale. So, the idea of a bruticus with Swindle troopers was pretty nice. Also, all the figures were at ridiculous clearance sale so he loved the military theme too much to pass it up. His only complaint was that they were lacking paint. It was a long time ago that we had the idea of a paint camo scheme and maybe some head swaps to turn them into individual characters.

So, whith my newfound love for Megazords, and the fact that I already had Legacy White Tigezord, I had the idea of trading some TFs for the Legacy Thunderzords. I proposed a lot more figures for it. Around a 500$ value in fact. But he thought he was tight in shelf space and preffered the custom job instead of the extra figures. (I even proposed a G1 Soundwave and his team but he prefer realistic land vehicles). I was happy to accept the job.

Customising the set was pretty easy because I merely had to add paint aps directly. Only dissasembling Onslaught to spray paint the Bruticus chest plate and the head-swapping were truly challenging.

I'm not that good at painting but I did managed to make something cool I guess.

Fun stuff - I've always liked the idea of Combiner teams having backups, and having those backups be a squad of semi-generics is pretty fun - makes me want to see Defensor with Autotrooper limbs.

The paintjobs are lovely - what type of paint did you use for Bruticus's chest? Intriguing look. The variance among the cadet team's camo patterns is a pretty cool in how it allows them to have a clear uniform while still have some variety between them (besides the heads, of course!).

For Bruticus's chest, I spray painted it using a plain ordinary can of Krylon Fusion for plastics, "decorative touch textured shimmer". Color is gun-metal-ish. It's pretty effective, it dry fast, and it cover very well. It tend to rub off in places where joints and pegs make friction though. Still, it's cheap and easy to use. Krylon is my favorite brand of spray paint.

As for the rest, I used some Tamiya water paint for models, using a brush.

I see :-) also you should take more pride in your painting skills as this looks really good.

Hey, thanks! But a camo patern is just made to be sloppy. That's why it does look great. But making clean mechanical details is much, much harder. That's why I... cheat around my weakness and turn it into my advantage! ;)

Pretty cool but the heads on the Cadets look out of place.

Thanks - always assumed textured sprays would murder the detail, but you've shown that you can achieve a solid coat without bunging up the panel lines etc. (Krylon's also my favorite spray, on account of variety, availability, quality and cost, although it's seen less use now that I've finally found a reasonably priced airbrush. Craigslist can be pretty great!)

To preserves details with texture spray, the trick in simple. NO base coat, and as few coats as possible. Thin coats that is. This way, details are not lost.

What I also love to do is to pray a shiny metalic silver base coat from Krylon and spray over that with a CLEAR colored paint from Tamiya. It give a very bright and shiny metalic color!

BTW, I have TWO more combiner customs in the work. The limbs will not be modded but the torso bots will be. There will be one custom for the same friend and one for me. Stay tuned!
