What paints are you using? Acrylics are easy to work with and wash off with water but they chip easily once dried. Enamels are toucher but take alot longer to dry and can smudge easier.
I use a mix of both because i am awesome (:P) but i recommend you start out with some acrylics as they are evry user friendly. To protect your paint from chipping, buy some clear matte varnish. Once you have applied all your paint, take the matte varnish and apply it all over the surfaces you painted on. It'll create a protective layer and should help against chipping.
If you are having problems with paint chipping in joints, the matte varnish probably wotn help much and you will have to use an advanced technique involving superglue but i dont think you are quite ready for that yet.
And yes, buy GOOD brushes and take care of them.
