Building G1 Skyfire

This thread is just old posts that were scattered during the building process of this figure. It may get repedative at times.

I did a quick mock up of the external parts (with construction paper) and where they'll be placed. The problem is the main body of the ship looks a bit big. The wing size will need to be widened when it's done in steel and the side vents/chest panels sit low. The backpack will sit lower after the head cover and truck headlights are gone.

Image

Here's toon Skyfire with little to no crap on the bottom side. As you can see, having the arms folded under creates a thick underbelly. The only option is to C-notch the upper body causeing everything to move up/back. The Prime chest/windows will be cut down for the Skyfire panels so ignore that. The biggest problem is that the rear/legs will be alot higher than the rest of the plane.

Image

Bot mode.
Everything here will work except the wings won't fold in any further than pictured. Molding the arms, legs, hip, and head will be easy with the use of panel bonding and Fuzor plastic repair.

Image

The chest panels will be grafted to the windows here and the cockpit will be hinged at the upper body. Primes leg vents will be molded into the boob flaps cause I'm to lazy to build them. The waist and arms will retain all it's original articulation.

Image

This is the stuff I'll need to fabricate for the project. That's the easy part. I'll do it this weekend.

All accessories will be made from 22 gauge steel. Welded and filled here in this pic. It still needs the boosters and upper fins

Image

The cockpit is a single seater using parts from the Rhino Rig toy of M.A.S.K. I'm too lazy to mold a plexiglass visor so I'm just using the steel cutout.

Image

Here's the cut down of the Prime Masterpiece chest. It looks like a total POS at this point.

Image

The only product on the face of the Earth that can accomplish this project is 3M's Panel Bond adhesive. We use it in the Autobody bizz to glue roofs and panels on.

Image

Here's the extra parts I made for the arm swing transformation. It will be clear what I mean later. You can see I glued Primes grill onto the upper part of the chest. It will hinge the front of the plane.

Image

Here's the assembled upper body.

Image

Here's the assembled pic. Still needs a shitload of molding on the upper arms, knees, waiste, head, and side leg armor.

Transformation sequence

Image

The head turns around before flipping over. It buries the head further into the chest to allow cutting down the flippy thing.

Image

Here you can see why the original grill assembly was used. It allows this section to rotate as well as hinge.

Image

...and flips the other way for arm #2 to pass.

Image

Here's the plane mode without accessories

Image

Here's all the crap added on.

Image

Anywho, here's a comparison shot for the bot mode

Here he is sporting the new leg armour and hip treatment. The chest panels were a major pain in the ass to construct. They had to be welded on in place. But they are nice and tight. :thumb

Image

The holes on the upper chest will be filled with intake vents. It makes sense seing as the lower chest is also vented and appears to be exaust ported. At present time, all hip and armour parts are taped on. I'll straighten it out when it gets the glue.

Image

Here's the revised transformation. The chest panels slide out and unlock the frontal section of the plane. I was amazed that they just happen to lock it into place as I never planned it.

Image

The chest panels now hinge off to the side and the regular transformation starts.

Image

The kness are level with the arms to give a more rounded, finished feel.

Image

Here's Bumblebee protecting Scrapfire during buildup. Skyfire likes to be at his best when he gets his ass handed to him.

Image

A rear shot shows the leg armour and how it locks into the original Prime legs. The boosters and upper fins are finished but I forgot to slap em on for the pics. DUMMY ME!

Here it is with the wash primer and sealer applied. The detail lines are then etched into this primer. Another fitting to make sure everything still moves.

All parts painted and baked. (Being a bodyman, I have access to a side draft thermo bake spray booth)

The gun isn't finished yet. I did modify it from the toon version as I thought the scope would be a nice touch.

Image

Shown above are the finished wings. They have a thin layer of 3M rockerguard plastic applied to keep them from rubbing paint off. I don't think I mentioned that the wings are designed like real wings. They are a tad blunt at the front and taper off to the back. This became a problem as the transparent plastic fatted them up which resulted in them getting jamed in the slots. A quick and carful grind fixed the problem.

Image

You can kinda see the wings overlap through the bolt hole thingy shown here. Joo can also see the harness that bolts to the figures back. I had to make it stiff as hell cause it weighs a ton.

Image

The backpack needed a low area to pin the wings to so I built it as shown. The boosters cover the bolts.
