Lucky Draw KO Skydive -- a little experiment

Since I’m unwilling to spend the money required to buy the lucky draw Optimus Primal’s, I’ve decided some time ago that I was going to paint them myself. (Still haven’t gotten around to it.) Of course, one of the releases is a chrome gold version and, as most of us know, chrome gold can be hard to create without actual chrome. So I tried a little experiment that I had heard others use.

I took a KO G1 Skydive and used clear paint over a cote of metallic silver and put a glossy cote on top. I’m not too dissatisfied with the result, although it might have been better had I used clear yellow instead of clear orange (but the lid really looked like chrome gold so I went with that :P ).

As I said, it’s an experiment so I didn’t spend too much time on it. Only airbrushed one layer of silver and also only one layer of clear orange and it clearly shows in uneven colors and the silver shining through the orange, and the original blue at places coming through the silver.

Ah well, too bad...it was and is after all just an experiment.

Nevertheless, I do feel the colors look nice.

The chrome silver parts (wings and nosecone) were already like that.

Looks good. Not quite chrome, but very few paints that say they're chromed really turn out that way. And I think the orange was a good choice. It might be an idea to test some yellow on a scrap piece as well, but that gold has turned out well.

Just a thought, but you might want to try Alclad 2 lacquers. I haven't tried them myself yet, but they're supposed to be really good at giving a realistic chrome finish, and I believe they're formulated for airbrush use. If you could use them, then apply the yellow or orange clearcoat over the top, that should give you a real Lucky Draw finish.

Here's a linky to their website...

Thanks for the positive comments.

Ramrider: thanks for the link. Had never heard of that brand. Definitely something I'll keep in mind.

First, however, I want to try clear yellow. Still have a KO Air Raid, but initially I had planned to try this methode on a C Downshift to make a Sunstreaker. Might still go for that.

Do know that I probably won't be using an airbrush for this. Took me a long time and a lot of effort to clean the airbrush after using the clear paint.

It may not be true chrome, but it sure is metallic looking.
