I'm planing to repaint a trailer in G1 colours to go with my movie Optimus Prime.
The trailer that I'm using is mainly black plastic and I want to know how many coats of grey paint I should do to get a nice smooth finish, I'm also planing to repaint a knock off transformer to use as Roller, the figure that I'm using for Roller is mainly red and grey plastic, as for the trailer, how many coats of navy blue paint will I need for that smooth finish.
Please help

thats depends on which paint u r using ,if the trailer is black i'll recommend a white or grey primer before stating the paint job .
for such a big trailer i'll recommend u try air brushing it and not brushing it ,if u dont have an airbrush u can use spray can.
tamiya has excellent spary cans ...
i usually do 2-3 layers and then the final layer is varnish.

For a "smooth" finish as with anything else its all in how you prep it.
1. Alot of people use sand paper, I typically use the tan varity of scotch brite pads scuff the hell out of it. It will give the primer something to bite into.
2.I would recommend hosing it down with glass cleaner making sure its completly dry before priming!
3.Prime.
4.Again you could use the scotch brite pad for this but I prefer 600 grit sandpaper. You can also use water with the 600 grit to "wet sand" it will be a little messy unless you prefer dust.
5. clean again with glass cleaner or soap and water.
6.Primer is sinister in the way that absorbs moisture make sure you give it some time to dry!!!
7. Paint away! If using rattle can testors or krylon or whatever use several light coats dont load up a specific area too quick or it will run!
8. Take your time! Good luck! cant wait too see it!
This is great
