Im trying to figure out the same thing dude. I have been thinking bout using Shadow commander as the main body but i was thinking abiut getting some modelling putty and custom making some clips and tabs to use as connecters so that when you pull them apart they can go back to being the original toy they started off being and not look like they ever got modified at all. What are you using as your components?

not sure at the moment, possibly classics prime, generations jazz (when it comes out), generations drift, some other universe/classics/generations cars and stuff.
using modelling putty is a good idea, think i'll try that.
what are you using for components?

Thats a good idea with the different cars as limbs. Im using Nemesis prime and the Shadow commander as motormaster, i've go the universe Drag strip and i was going to try repaint Henkei sideswipe as Wildrider but thats as far as i have got and i was going to try make a new Motormaster head for Nemesis primes body and do something with the Shadow commander head to make it look like Menasors

I would use magnets so that they come on and off easily, but stay on strong...

It really depends on how strong you want the connection to be, what range of motion you want the limbs to have, and how much plastic on the torso and limbs you want to devote to the connectors.
Ball joints from Xevoz or a similar toyline (or junked Transformers) work OK if the limbs aren't too heavy or you don't need extreme poses in the legs. If you want a wider range of action, you might want to look at some of the connectors used on the PCC toys or Energon combiners. Or you could build snap-together connectors where the joint itself was entirely encased in one or the other component.
Just make sure that the joints aren't stronger than whatever you're using to attach them to the body parts, or you'll be ripping chunks out of the components every time you disassemble the combined form.

You may also try megablocks joints. There are some similar to bionicles, some are racheting joints. May find some older kits online. I recovered a set from my kids when they outgrew it. And bought a more recent set from Tuesday Morning (an overstock store).
