Mindwipe

Anyone who knows about planes can probably tell you that stealth planes are black. Revenge Of The Fallen Mindwipe transforms into a stealth bomber. Naturally Hasbro made him green, I mean, what other colour could they possibly have chosen? </sarcasm>

For this repaint I wanted the jet mode to look authentic and the robot mode to make references to his original G1 incarnation. The problems:

-Mindwipe's G1 toy and cartoon appearances were red, black and pink
-In the comics he was red, black and purple
-Movieverse characters consist of silver robot parts with the colour coming from parts of the alternative mode sprinkled around the limbs. I had to abandon that rule.

I decided to ignore the pink cos, well, he's supposed to look scary. I also left out the purple to make his appearance closer to that of the cartoon. Unfortunately, after painting his robot mode exactly how I wanted it I realised it put a large red patch on top of the plane. So much for realism!

Very impressive. I think the red on the top of the plane looks fine. If it were painted black I think that the robot mode would suffer a bit. The red chest breaks up all of the black in a nice way.

I have a question, I only saw Mindwipe in the store once and I picked him up. Mine wasn't green. It is flat black and has the red parts of his robot mode similar to your custom. I love this figure but never researched it much. Was there different variations of hum? I believe I got mine at Kmart.

BTW, your custom looks good.

A lot of planes have simple decoration, even Blackbirds have bright red lines so I think the red can be justified. If I did it again I think I could put red elsewhere to break up the robot mode without any red appearing on the plane but I don't think it looks bad at all.

Thank you.
It's possible the Euro release is different but I don't remember anything about it, but then I tend to ignore news of repaints. The one in the Seibs gallery does seem to be much darker than mine. I'm not even sure mine is a Euro release - it hasn't shown up in shops in my area, I ordered it online.

I have a quick question here. I have an extra Strafe that I want ot repaint. Ususally I take the whole figure apart and paint each piece individually. How would you deal with the springs in the wing tips? Springs seem to be the bane of my exsistence when it comes to repaints.

Are you asking about taking the figure apart without losing the springs or about painting the springs?

It is more about putting the figure back together and getting the springs to work the way that they're supposed to. I should have taken a closer look at Mindwipe before I originally posted, it seems that they are pinned in place. Thanks anyway.

I rarely take fuigures apart anymore. Mostly just to get to tight spots.

Nice work Myk.. I got a few more weeks and I'll have my workshop fully opened all of my new tools! I'll be tackling my backlog of projects! Seeing this actually inspired me for another 1 :P
