I've been mucking about with Artweaver a lot lately (excellent freeware painting program - available to download from http://www.artweaver.de) - it's become my program of choice for colouring, and I've started to experiment with digital painting on it, too.

Just for the yuks, this is based on a photo I took of my Classics Cliffjumper. The grid was created using a Textures filter, and with the figure itself, I removed the background and copied it onto two identical layers. On the bottom one I applied an 'Oilify' filter, to make it look more painterly, then on the upper layer, I applied a 'Sketch' filter and set the layer to Multiply. I quite like the way it's turned out, so I may well do some more filter muckery-aboutery in the future.

Thank you so much for introducing me to this program, it's awesome!
I used to have Paint shop pro 6 but the computer with that on died years ago and I don't have the discs, this is a more than adequate replacement and its free, so thanks again!

No problem! Free is my favourite price, too. I actually saw it recommended in a small article in ImagineFX magazine (about digital art), and thought I'd give it a crack. So glad I did. :D And it's getting better all the time - if you keep tabs on the site, you can see when it's upgraded; I only noticed it had gone up to 0.4.7 a couple of weeks ago (I'd been running plain 0.4 for ages). I downloaded the new version and there's some really cool extra features added (most notably the anti-aliasing control for the lasso).

Not bad, though I could get the same effect on the figure in Photoshop with a single filter, The Artistic filter Posterize.
