Due to a string of events that have been somewhat fortuitus, I have for the first time in ages everything I need for a reformat of my PC (which has been in desterate need of it for a while) so I may not be albe to do the xpgames as usual tonight. I should be able to mark the scalp hunt tommorrow as planned, and will either do the xpgames later in the week, or just leave it until next week, when normal service will resume.
Sorry for any inconveniance.

Wow. A Vista hater too. And here I was thinking I couldn't like you any less than I do now!
If you've got the computing power, go Vista Red!

How do you make Vista not blue screen 3 times daily from running Outlook, Photshop, and Word?
Tell me that and I'll tell you it doesn't suck; it shouldn't suck, it's features are quite amazing, but BLUE SCREEN IS NO FEATURE.
</frustration>
Back on subject - God speed Red. If your machine lives, we look forward to your continued slagging.

My guess is you're running an old machine that isn't designed to run Vista, that seems to be the biggest cause of Vista problems.
I've been running it for 18 months and never once experienced a blue screen.
Except that time when there was a problem with the monitor cable. Lots of blue then.

Been meaning to ask this, what's your start and end day for these things Red?

Been running Vista for almost a year and never had it blue screen. Didn't even know Windows could blue screen after 98/ME.

Actully this PC came with it (about a year and a half ago), and I've used it and liked it ever since (thats right, *I LIKE VISTA*).
However, becuase it came preinstalled, it naver came with a cd, which has left me somewhat buggered if I ever want to do a reinstall as I am the only one in the house using it. Recently the PC has been performing very badly (things crashing that shouldnt mainly) and I decided it was time to clear out all the crap and start afresh. Aided with the fortuitus fact that my brother's friend who was at our new year's party yesterday has a copy, I undertook to do just that.
Yeah, whilst the PC runs better in general use now, it's also flagged what the real problem was. The hard drive. It's knackered. Right now, I cant even start up the PC without having the OS cd at hand to 'repair' it upon start up. Also, when ever I install something, everythign grinds to a near hault, and I get ugly messages about how my hard drive is gonna die and I really should be backing it up about now...
Add to that the fact my network card decided it didnt want to work in the slot it was in, and the lower slot was for reasons unknown, an increadibly tight fit, and things are not going well for my poor PC.
So yeah, Im gonna have to invest in a new hard drive (it would the be relativly new, and much bigger one that dies wouldnt it...) and do it all again tommorrow...
... and to think that before this I was actully concidering giving it a shinny new graphics card, that'll have to wait a bit longer.
Oh, and for the record, year and a half, and not one single blue screen of death. Only Vista related problem I have ever had is with the fully updated version of KotOR, KotOR2 and Lego Star Wars not working, everything else I've tried, old and new, has worked, and worked very well thank you very much.Burn wrote:Been meaning to ask this, what's your start and end day for these things Red?
The hunt of the xp thingie?
The hunt is on for a little under 20 hours, finishing at a minute to midnight tonight GMT, and the XP Games gets done sometime every thursday evening/night (depending on what real life throws me that week, and how lazy i'm feeling).

It's all a dream a very very bad dream. Just close your eyes and wake up in the real world. It's ok Burn, It's ok to see things just don't converse with them and you're fine.

On the plus side, you're getting in before a total hard drive failure.
Been there done that.
Oh that poor poor porn lost.Mogwai Prime wrote:It's all a dream a very very bad dream. Just close your eyes and wake up in the real world. It's ok Burn, It's ok to see things just don't converse with them and you're fine.

Yeah, there is that, but there's that nagging thought at the back of my head that says; 'what if it's the motherboard that is the real problem?'. Afterall, the network card developed a bizzare ability to not work in the slot it's been in since I installed it all those HMW fueled months ago (although it isnt the first time I've had a similer problem with Belkin network cards, same thing happened on my old PC). But ahh well, I'll just have to tackle that potential hurdle, if it comes along, when it comes along.

My last computer was a pain in the arse. Something was wrong that prevented it from powering up from time to time.
Changed the power supply, didn't do any good. Stripped it down, cleaned it all out. Same problem.
It was put down to all the salt whipped up into the air by the cyclone a year before finally corroding something. Fortunately the insurance fixed all that up and now i've got a spiffy Vista machine.
But yeah, it's a pain in the arse when you think it's one thing and it's something else. My experience, you can generally hear a hard drive on the brink of failure anyway.

Oh yeah, that happened to my ex's machine.
She asked me what the problem was, I said the hard drive was borked.
Now me, I would have just gone out and replaced it, but this was a PC World package computer, inusred or garenteed or something, so she had to go via PC World's policy and get them to pick it up and fix it.
2 motherboards, a graphics card and something else later.... ther finaly turn round and say; 'yes, it was the harddrive'....

Sucky, warranty or not they second they said give it to me to fix I would have just bought the HDD. They're just milking the insurance probably.

Seconded.
And Wingspan, if you've got the processing power and RAM, it won't do that nearly as much. Vista is a bit of a resource hog, but if you've got the power it requires, it'll run almost seamlessly. Which is about as much as you can hope to expect from a Microsoft product.

There's no sane reason for people to run Vista, yes, even DX10 is not a reason. But Vista is yesteryears windowsME.
Though most Vista crashes can be related to driver issues from the hardware suppliers I think it's fair to say that with claims of Vista's greatness, those shouldn't have happened in the first place.
Because if I want a computer that obsoletes all my hardware and software with every new version, I'd buy a mac.

There's no major problem with Vista, since I got it, it is running smoothly, that I couldn't say about the time I had XP.
