Perfect Effect's PE-11 Scouting Force X Toy Review (Warning: Many Pictures Inside!)

Hi all, just collected my pre-order of “Not Reflector” from a local toy shop and I thought I’d do a simple review on him for the benefit of all you guys. Do pardon that I’m not too much of a wordsmith, so there’ll not a lengthy wall of text to go through.

Okay, now let’s take a look at the box.

Front:

Back:

Opening the box, the contents are packaged and laid neatly on a plastic tray, together with one sheet of instructions.

Image

Close-up of the contents in the box:
Image

As you can see, a plethora of accessories come with the three robots. At first glance, you can see 3 rifles, 3 daggers, 2 rifle accessories, shield/camera base, lens, flash and tripod stand. Some of the accessories are very small, especially the dagger holders, so be sure to put them away from small children.

Taking all the accessories and laying them out in this picture.

Following the instructions of putting all the stuff onto the robots:
Image

I like how the accessories differentiate 3 similar-mould triplets into 3 distinctly different robots. Like the other Perfect Effect products, the robot figures, though small, have many points of articulation. Other than the standard articulated neck, shoulder, elbows, waist, hips and knees, Scouting Force X also come with ankle articulation as well.

Now let’s us take a closer look at each individual component of “Reflector”.

SFX-01 Edge:

SFX-02 Shield:

SFX-03 Bullet:

SFX-03 impresses me the most in terms of the thought process in the design. The long piece of tripod stand not only serves as a weapon for SFX-03, it also acts as a balance to counter the back heavy robot when the “camera lens” is attached.

Remember the tiny daggers that come with the figures? They can be stored away at the back of the figures like this.

Image

Really, these daggers are like a bonus item. There is really no need to include them in but the addition is highly appreciated.

A few more pictures of Team Scouting Force X and a size-comparison shot with their comrades-in-arms.

Now you may ask, is there any place to keep all those accessories on the toy itself when transforming the figures, or do you have to leave them aside? The answer lies in the next picture.

Image

Yes, there are slots and space to keep all the extra accessories that are not necessary in the transformation so you’ll not lose them too easily.

Now that the extra parts are stored away in their places, we can now form the next transformation in the instructions sheet.
For those of you who are familiar to Power Rangers, you might recall that the Rangers sometimes call upon a Super Cannon or Bazooka weapon that needed the entire team to power and use? Hah, Team Scouting Force X does have a similar ability as well.

Having shown off their robot modes, we’ll now proceed to the Alt mode of an SLR camera. Transformation of the figures to the 3 camera components is very easy and they share identical transformation steps. Push down their arms, swing their forearms to the back, fold their legs to the back and you are done.

Fix them together side and side and attach all the camera accessories (flash, lens, camera top cover thingy, camera base/shield and tripod) and you’ll get the following pictures.

Finally, we have “Reflector” in action, taking a picture of the Class of Mini-cons.

This ends my review of PE-11 Scouting Force X, AKA Relector. Thanks for viewing.

Thanks for an excellent pictorial review: very clear what everything is and does and how everything ties together.
Looks like an excellent set, especially when considering the separate robots. Love all the accessories: looks like these guys are a one-camera-army.
The alt-mode is probably the weakest aspect of this Transformer: it does look like a camera, but the colors, the kibble and the lens all do make it look like an afterthought. Still, all together this is an excellent effort and another step up for PE!

A great review. No hands fumbling in the way to block things from sight. No distracting voice stumbling over words or saying "um" every few minutes. A video review is useful for a figure with a more complicated transformation process, but these guys look pretty self-explanatory, and - let's admit it - we want to see the various accessory combinations in action here. A photo series displays this wonderfully.

As far as people griping about colors and kibble, at least these guys match each other, unlike the G1 Reflector set. It's obvious from the character choice and color scheme the target market here is G1 collectors, and we grew up with kibble so we should be used to it by now. Yes, it was annoying sometimes to keep track of everything, but the storage slots with this set solve that problem, and I like my TFs armed to the teeth. A single handgun or missile launcher doesn't do it for me. They are fighting a war after all, not having a showdown.

Very well done! And I too am one of those that prefer a pictorial review over video review anytime. This just makes me more excited to get these guys in the mail!!

Looking forward to more pic reviews from you in the future and2ng.

When I see them I just have to get them, if only because my father used a camera of a similar shape back in the day. :) This may be the most versatile figure, both official and third party, I've seen in ages! Definitely wishlisted.

Yes, I'll still be getting that Perceptor retool, be it Reflector or not.

I've got a question: how hard was it to put weapons in hand? I'm having a tough time getting them in hand with the exception of the tri-pod cannon. All the weapon handles seem too big to fit. I may have to shave mine down a little. :-(

It was a pretty tight fit for me, but the only ones I had major trouble with was the ballistic shield going in the hand of the guy marked 2. It did fit decent in 3's hand, though, so I swapped their accessories.

I honestly didn't try putting the knives in any of their hands, though.

I put a knife in one's hand and only after much struggling managed to get it out again. I'm really tempted to just put them away and not use them.

Yes, placing the weapons in the hands was kind of a bitch, but man these little guys are AWESOME!! Just got mine in today. I gotta say that PE did an outstanding job! For these guys to be the size they are, they have great articulation. I believe I'm gonna have to get the others that I'm missing out on.....
