So, which do you think is a better fit for this set?

The US release of Onslaught or the Japanese version (aka USA Edition) with the more saturated blue?

At first I put him on the US version but I'm having second thoughts now.

Input would be appreciated.

Sorry I'm completely useless to your question but I have one for you. Would you consider this set still worth the price if you own both versions of Hothead already?

I'd say go with the Takara version for the head kit. Especially if you've got Stronghold which uses the Hasbro release. I'm kind of surprised you bit on this set. It seemed pretty useless to me. He could use maybe one of the guns. I dunno, I just didn't see the appeal here. That and Onslaught has never been a Headmaster.

I'll be adding Butcher to my USA Edition Onslaught. I just love the deeper colors. I was gonna buy the TFCon Stronghold, but kinda glad I passed on that.

He won't be Onslaught to me anyway. Gonna be a new character so it's all gravey.

I really dig Stronghold. The headmaster stat readout in the chest is a genius touch. I wish the face itself looked a little more like Max but I still like it. Removing the green helps to make it stand out and become it's own thing. Plus I really don't see us getting another crack at Fort Max for the Classics line. I only regret not jumping on Toxin when I had the chance. That was the deco that would have made me buy a version of that mold.

As far as Butcher goes, I'd rather have had Headrobots make new heads for the Cybertron combiner molds as a set. That Onslaught and company deserve better, more G1 or Classics inspired heads. This just seemed like retreading old ground to me. I already owned two versions of this set already. The USA edition is getting ready to be stored since I have no use for 2 Onslaughts in my Classics set up.

On a related note: does Stronghold come with the comic? I've seen the pages online but without captioning and at this point it coming with the comic is the deciding factor for me ordering one.

It was an attendee free thing if I'm not mistaken. I had a friend who hooked me up with Stronghold and the comic was thrown in at no extra cost. You'd probably have to inquire about it from whoever you tried to get it from. It's an oversized magazine. Very few pages but the art and coloring is great, the story is fun too.
