Not including the comics because ive never really read any of them and because I really am not a big fan of comics. So really just in the G1 time line. I seem to remeber another time besides the movie.

He was brought back in Dark Awakening and 'died' at the end of that ep (although we never saw him die, his ship exploded). In Return of Prime, it turns out he was still alive but seemed to be dead/unconcious/sleeping/daydreaming of Elita 1 because he was completely unresponisve. The Quintesson brought him back to life and he kept living to the end of Rebirth.

However, he died in ep 3 of the japanese headmasters, to return in some manga years later. But someone else who knows more about that than I should continue the story from there.

Once in G1.

In the movie, what we saw walking about in Dark Awakening was an animated Autobot cadaver. The Quintessons used some circuit implants and some trace memory patterns to convince both the Autobots and what was left of Optimus' brain that Optimus was alive. The Matrix just awoke some other memory remnents, just enough for Optimus' corpse to know what was right and wrong.

So, ignoring the Japanese continuity, yes, he only died once.

Indeed. The bot we know as Optimus Prime (or Convoy in Japan) was bought back in the Victory series as Victory Leo, destroyed, and later brought back AGAIN as Star Convoy in the Battlestars manga. So, I guess that makes 4 times in all the animated continuities.

Not a fan of comics? They're usually the best written media of most franchises such as Transformers, Daredevil or Batman.

I mean, look at the TF cartoons, most including most of G1, are crap.

On topic, I wish Optimus would stay dead. Much prefer Rodimus Prime.

Well you can't exactly igmore the Japanese continuity, because their version of Headmasters is directly from the US continuity of G1 events.

It's just what you prefer.

First of all, in Masterforce, that is not Optimus Prime/Convoy, that is God Ginrai, a seperate character from Convoy.

In Masterforce, they originally built a new body for O Prime/Convoy, but he was dead since Headmasters (Japan), so the body was used by it's Godmaster, Jinrai. It is not Convoy at all.

When Black Zarak or Devil Z awakened the transformers, they no longer needed the Godmaster to transform, and he was known as God Ginrai, just without the human counterpart.

In Victory, God Ginrai was destroyed, and rebuilt into Vicory Leo.

In the manga about Star Convoy, it's still not exactly Convoy, and he is controlled by Hot Rod...or something like that, I can't remember so someone help me out.

So Optimus Prime died once in the US G1 continuity, and died twice in the Japanese continuity.

So I count 1 or 2, just pick which continuity you wnat to go by.

See, it's only because of the additional deaths in the comics that he GETS this reputation at all. He died in a video game duel, he came back as a Powermaster, he died fighting Unicron, he came back in his Action Master body, he died fighting the Swarm, and was then reconstructed by it.

And there's the knock-on "Optimus death" effect which saw Optimus Primal blown up in space to return as a Transmetal, die fighting Megatron during Beast Machines and return by simply choosing not to join the Allspark, then to finally die at the end of the series, as well as Armada Optimus's death by the Hydra Cannon, and his recreation by the Mini-Cons.

It's a wierd cycle that the movie kicked off.

Sure I can. They talk in moonspeak and I can't understand it, so I ignore it. Problem solved. OP died once in the G1 continuity and that's fine by me. Now as for Beast Wars/Beast Machines...I can't even honestly tell anymore. And the comics, yikes.

Suffice to say Optimus Prime is the closest to a Jesus Christ figure I have seen in modern North American culture. That's part of his appeal.

Is he? I have a hard time imagining Jesus running around with a big gun blasting the crap out of evil robots.
