Characters you didn't like at first, but grew on you

I am posting this in here rather than in the General discussion because this thread just seems prone to spoilers. (Use your spoiler tags ladies and gentlemechs!)

Please don't take it personal if I didn't like your favorite at first. If anything this thread is to encourage discussion about character development, not for bashing. Sometimes appreciation has to be learned which I believe means more.

Whirl (MTMTE)- When I first saw Whirl I thought he was kinda a jerk. Always trying to start fights with Cyclonus and he came off as really rude. I think it took up until the issue where he and Cyclonus saved certain another character for me to like him. It took me many issues to really empathize with his character.

Smokescreen (Prime)- At first I thought he was really impulsive and overly enthusiastic. Over the course of the show it seems to grow quite a bit. I think the most defining moment for me was when he chose to use the forge to revive Optimus rather than letting him refuse treatment. I think that it was very selfless of him and for that I respect him a lot.

Chromedome and Rewind (MTMTE) - Ok so I didn't actually dislike either of them at all. I just hadn't noticed or cared about either one of them until their story line really took place. I like how the writers made me care about two characters I otherwise may have not noticed. Now I see them more for their individual traits than their story together, Chromedome especially.

Ratchet (Marvel G1) - he was always portrayed as a heroic bot who was put in situations that he didn't want to be in and he came off as kind of a whiner to me at 1st. But after reading the Marvel comics from beginning to end a few times, Ratchet is now 1 of my all-time favorite characters. His IDW iteration has helped, both in MTMTE and ReGeneration. Next to Optimus Prime, he is probably the most selfless Autobot in the entire series, each time he sacrificed a lot (including himself) to stop Megatron. 3 times he gave everything he had to stop Megatron, and in the end it cost him his life. But thanks to him, Megatron was finally defeated.

Unicron (G1) - he is that ultimate enemy. The final boss. The one everyone is afraid of. At 1st I thought he was kinda stupid, being a planet Transformer that just eats other planets. Galactus rip-off, anyone? But his backstory in the Marvel comics was really cool and intertwined with Primus. So now I think he's pretty badass, and he can mind-control Transformers to be his heralds. That's pretty cool, as well as giving them upgrades just by snapping his fingers basically. I hope he will make an appearance in the live action films someday, as long as he is done right, not like Galactus was in FF2.

Sixshot (IDW) - not that I didn't dislike him or anything at first; just that my first impression was "that other phase-sixer that's not as developed as Overlord or hi-and-die as Black Shadow". Having finally gotten to read through Furman's -ations storyline and Sixshot's spotlight I've found that he's actually one of my favourite parts of IDW; largely through his large apathy towards being a phase-sixer and really wanting to escape that role. The Deathbringers' offers to him in particular really play with this. I wanna see him come back some day; along with Scorponok. Why haven't they done anything yet

Brainstorm (IDW) has grown on me. The crackpot inventor thing is kinda cool and the whole briefcase stuff while I had issues at first, looking back I kind of see him as a bit of a bad mofo.

Case in point:

Galvatron (G1 cartoon) His brand of nutty was always what put me off and how he seemed to not care for his troops (whereas I feel Megatron did at least more so), but the nutty has a certain charm to it now and is more comical than not. The only issue is by the seeming discontinuity between him being Megatron and him being reformatted into Galvatron, but I'm okay with it now I guess. He's not my top pick, but he is now a much funner character for me to enjoy.

Have you read Spotlight: Metroplex? Probably waiting for something else dealing with Salvatan or wherever if I had to guess.

It's literally one of the six IDW Transformers stories I haven't read (the others also being spotlights - Prowl, Ramjet, Blurr, Jazz and one other from AHM I can't quite remember atm)

For me, the G1 Sweeps I initially disliked (I didn't see TFTM until 1989, in its television broadcast debut as part of the "Puppetmaster Prime" episodes), mainly because they completely displaced the first series of Decepticon Jets (I consider the coneheads ugly and back then I disliked the coneheads even more because they bore a passing resemblance to hideous Go-Bots), and I positively adore the trine of Starscream, Skywarp, and Thundercracker where the Sweeps aside Scourge were too similar to differentiate. As I learned just who the Sweeps were supposed to be before I saw it happen, I was resentful of them for replacing the characters I really liked (including the Insecticons). They didn't start to grow on me until after I'd seen TFTM. I had been in a stage where I didn't like beards on Humans, let alone Giant Robots, but now the beards are smexay lol.

Likewise I was peeved about Galvatron. I liked his design, thought his insanity was amusing and probably an understandable "nerfing" (in terms of power levels, so he wasn't OMG OVER 9000 anymore), but I absolutely hated the fact that he replaced Megatron. Like, not just replaced, but that he was reshaped from Megatron. But now, I'm a little more sympathetic to the character because OMG the crap he went through in TFTM.

Huh. That same friend mentioned a MUSH. I wonder if it was the same group.

The Rebirth Zarak. I never liked him much as a kid, but watching now, he's pretty badass.

- Looks like a super villain
- Telepathic Alien capable of controlling machines with his mind
- Builds a city-sized Transformer. On his own. In a day.
- Stands up to Galvatron and even forces him into a dual leadership role.
- Nearly kills Daniel and even actually hurts him.

Plus his voice acting is spot on.

G1 Starscream and Shockwave.

As a kid I didn't like them because of their attempts to overthrow Megatron who I was always loyal to. As I got older though, I realised what interesting characters they actually were.

Armada Demolisher.

His voice bugged me a little but his loyalty to Megatron and the fact he didn't seem an actual bad guy won me over.

TF Prime Megatron: initially, and when I was younger,, I found him kinda scary. İn the sense that, whenever he showed up, I worried an autobot would get seriously injured or even killed. Or even other deceptions.however, now, having researched much of the show, this is the same reason why I really like this version of the characters. Unlike others, he rarely says "receptions retreat" and is determined to the end and he can't be threatened by most opponents.

I'm going to resurrect this thread-- I just finished MTMTE and Lost Light...

Character that grew on me.... Megatron.

I honestly thought his redemption arc was pretty unearned considering right before the Dark Cybertron story he was FIRMLY a villain who tried to crush Bumblebee's head...then suddenly he's calling Bumblebee his friend. If you remove that pre-Dark Cybertron arc...I think moving him into a redemption story works. So I started out being rather resistant to his co-Captain role, but by the end I "got it"...still think he deserved death but thought Roberts' did a great job with the character.

For me IDW Megatron was the opposite. Furman gave the first fully competent Megatron in the -Ations and everything from Bombertron through to LL, butchered that characterisation. I've had a long held idea in media that if you don't like writing a certain character, then don't use them. Instead we got table-flipped retconned nonsense that simply didn't mesh with the same character presented in Megatron: Origin or the -Ations. That can be said for most characters from the -Ations era in the MTMTE/LL books. Narrative consistency wasn't a requirement.

On a positive note: Shockwave.
As far as G1 was concerned, being 3 - 5y/o around that time, the cartoon was my sole reference point. Sunbow would not endear you to Shockwave. Other than being "the purple guy with one eye" he was notable for nothing. Even Wreck Gar had more personality, purely from his TV quotes.

Fast forward many years into the future and with thanks to the Transformers Part Work, I saw the actual Shockwave. The G1 interation that had characterisation. The ruthless, logical intellect of Early IDW also.

Wheelie. I use to hate him until I read Wheelie, Wildboy of Quintessa. He is a child. Yes a child, but surivive on his own. I'm not for sure if Wheelie is the only child. Maybe he is or maybe hasn't been the only child Cybertronian, but now is. We see some in Beta group when she first introduce them in Forever Is Along Time Coming. We haven't seen any other Cybertronian kids in morden times, but we haven't seen anyother adult on Cybertron besides the military bots. Then agian we only saw one city, so maybe the civilians are elsewhere on Cybertron. Yes we seen them being built as adults, but that was doing the war ( even in season 3 the battle wasn't completely over). Maybe during a time of peace (complete peace), Cybertronians or at least some have kids. There are other kiddieformers as well too https://www.deviantart.com/shark235/jou ... -773471673.
