IDW Transformers Version 2.0 "A Bold New Era" Ongoing Discussion

We have a pair of news pieces to bring to you tonight related to the new IDW Transformers series.

Up first, we have a new cover to share with you for Issue #7 of the series! This cover comes to us from Christian Ward, and features Orion Pax in his Siege Leader toy's inner robot design that he is using in the comics. Issue 7 is currently solicited to come out in June.

And the other piece of news is a pretty cool little bit of information for those who enjoyed the original IDW run. Andrew Griffith has announced that he will be doing some artwork for the interiors of the upcoming Issue 4, which currently looks to be due May 1st. Griffith also has the honor, courtesy of the issue and pages he will be drawing, of designing a brand new character for us! While he cannot share her name or really anything about her yet, he was able to share with us her design, which looks pretty dang cool!

Check out the cover and the new yet-to-be-named character below, and let us know what you think in the comments section below!

^^This. Looks like she may have a beast mode, too? Seems different from everything we've seen thus far, including other newcomers.

Edit: That Optimus cover is the last thing you see before you die

I got an Airazor vibe too. Be nice to see her in modern fiction. It's probably not her but it is a cool design.

There was an Airazor in the previous IDW continuity, and she played a pretty decent part in the final 3 or 4 years of the series as the representative of her world to the Council of Worlds on Cybertron

Straight from IDW themselves, we have word that the new IDW Transformers #1 is getting a second run! The new Transformers continuity has reached issue #3 as of this week, and apparently it's first issue was a strong one, as we are getting a re-print of the pilot issue. The re-print is due for release on June 5, not too long after issue #6 is expected to be released.

You can check out the press release below, and let us know what you think in the comments section below!

IDW Proudly Announces Transformers #1 Second Printing After Sold-Out Debut Issue

Overwhelming Support from Fans and Retailers Marks Success for IDW Publishing’s 2019 Comic Book Relaunch

SAN DIEGO, CA (April 18, 2019) – IDW Publishing announces today that Transformers #1, the start of a bold new era of Transformers comic book continuity, has sold out at the distributor level. Due to its broad appeal, the swift sales of Transformers #1 has prompted a new printing of the issue, slated for release on June 5th.

"The response to the new Transformers series has been amazing," says editor David Mariotte. "For a franchise with such a rich history — not just here, but in so many mediums — the first issue was something we knew we had to get right and it's incredibly gratifying to me, the incredible creative team, the fine folks at Hasbro, and probably to Rubble and Bumblebee that so many people have jumped on-board. We have a lot more coming!"

Written by Brian Ruckley, author of the Godless World fantasy trilogy, and illustrated by Angel Hernandez and Cachét Whitman, the new Transformers series explores a critical time in Cybertron’s history: a world at peace, shaken by the first act of violence in generations. As a murder mystery unfolds, young Rubble and his mentor Bumblebee must come to grips with swirling conspiracies shattering the harmony of the society they hold so dear.

This bold new era of Transformers comics builds upon IDW Publishing’s fourteen years of storytelling with this beloved Hasbro brand. Delicately balancing action with startlingly personal drama, IDW’s Transformers comics have earned a fiercely loyal fanbase and much critical acclaim. The fresh new take of the bi-weekly Transformers series is designed to appeal to longtime fans and curious newcomers alike.

For information on how to secure copies of the Transformers #1 second printing (MAR198350) and subsequent issues, please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

Maybe a lot little less pop culture referencing and more focus on an engaging narrative? >:oP

It's not really an accomplishment for a first issue to a popular series to sell out. Get beyond the first arc with results like that and you're noteworthy.

Yeah second printings are great PR and usually a sign that there have been enough reorders to justify another run. It's also easy to print ten copies and declare a triumphant sellout at the distributor level.

The most recent second printings: TF vs Visionaries 1 after about 6,000 copies of the first printing were sold to shops, Unicron 1 over double that and Unicron 2 up over 9,000 - though please be sure to read the disclaimer on those links' destination as these are limited estimate numbers, best anyone can do though. The point is that we don't know yet if this indicates a roaring success or a small run.

My guess is that issue 1 probably did sell a ton (by TF comic standards) but the attrition rate is going to be painful to witness when we get beyond issue 3, assuming 4 continues the same pacing.

Marvel (and DC) relaunch constantly because slapping "#1" on the cover is an effective marketing tool to lure in the new reader.

I really think Issue 4 is going to be the make or break. 2 and 3 went slow, and if you have a 3rd issue in a row where things don't grab attention, then that to me is strike 3 and a lot check out.

Which is sad, I hate watching something fall flat and disappoint.

IDW Transformers Comic News with Preview for #4 Featuring CW Cyclonus and Exclusive #3 Cover

We have some fun Transformers comic news for you today.Firstly, Scotty P found that the third John Gallagher exclusive is up for preorder at Mutant Beaver Comics. It is not cheap and will cost Americans more due to it being Canada exclusive with rather pricey shipping options all around (for Canadians too). But that's run of the mill for the niche exclusives comics market. You can see the image below featuring Jetfire.

We also have a bigger preview for issue 4, thanks to Itunes, to go with the out of order page we got earlier (which we included again). It features fan favourite Cyclonus which looks exactly like the Combiner Wars toy, undercarriage and all.

Enjoy!

Just realized one of the things that really bugs me about this series ... the characters seem like they're drawn just fine, but the many panels with open backgrounds with little on the horizon and nothing but sky really irk me. Where are Cybertron's buildings? Where are all of the unique towers and city scenes that should cover most of Cybertron such as in the G1 cartoon or Beast Machines or Transformers Animated or the Bumblebee movie? It looks boring (and artistically lazy) that there is very little going on in the background.

Even less hope for a new Cyclonus mold to match the TR Targetmasters... :(

Me too. Not sure if I mentioned it before or not, but it really feels like the bots and the background dont exist in the same space. Cybertron feels very empty.
