We have sad news to bring to you on this Wednesday evening: David Wise, who wrote many of the Generation 1 cartoon episodes, has passed away. He died following a long battle with lung cancer, and passed away peacefully surrounded by family. The original news was written on his Twitter account by a family member.

David Wise was heavily involved with the original cartoon, and wrote more episodes than any other member of the show's staff. The episodes that he wrote included:

"Attack of the Autobots"
"Day of the Machines"
"Microbots"
"Make Tracks"
"The Secret of Omega Supreme"
"Kremzeek!"
"Auto-Bop"
"The Girl Who Loved Powerglide"
"The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1"
"The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 2"
"War Dawn"
"Trans-Europe Express"
"The Rebirth, Part 1"
"The Rebirth, Part 2"
"The Rebirth, Part 3"

We remember David Wise this evening as a great writer and a huge contributor to the Transformers cartoon and the fandom. He will be greatly missed.

After a tough battle with lung cancer, David Wise passed away peacefully at home last night surrounded by family. Please feel free to tag this account to express your condolences. All are welcome here, just as they were in David's life: friend, family, peer, fan, all of you.

Though it isn't perfect, "The Rebirth" was my introduction to the G1 cartoon thanks to its Rhino VHS tape release.

"The Key to Vector Sigma" and "War Dawn" were also some of my favorites to watch on Rhino's VHS tapes.

RIP, Mr. Wise.

The majority of his eps were so dang good, he arguably shaped the mythos of the Sunbow cartoon more than any other writer, which is remarkable considering he was never head writer or editor. Not surprising that he went on to become head writer for most of the original TMNT cartoon, meaning he might have been the biggest influence on late '80s and early '90s action cartoons in general.

Even the pilots he wrote for all-but-forgotten properties are worth a search on Youtube. Whether goofy as heck (Battletoads), or almost too dark for kids (Shadow Strikers, the only toy-commercial toon I've seen that immediately establishes the main villain having killed the lead hero's wife), it's like he just could not run out of story ideas for translating any toy or game brand into animation.

I've been enjoying his work since age 5, and can't think of any other scribe whose passing would sadden me more. My condolences to all his loved ones.
