Did Dion become Ultra Magnus?

In "War Dawn", Orion Pax became Optimus Prime and Ariel was revealed to become Elita 1. What happened to Dion? In the movie, Optimus called Magnus an "old friend", and Dion and Pax were best buds. Is there any proof that Dion became Ultra Magnus?

And no, I came up with this theory BEFORE I read it on wikipedia.

As in actual proof, no. It's just a theory Transfans enjoy entertaining from time to time: The what ifs

Just for record sake, Prime called Ironhide his 'old friend' too and nobody ever theorized he was Dion.

Dion could either be Ironhide or Ultra Magnus, but we will never know :-(

If you get technical, David Wise wrote the story long before the character of Ultra Magnus was created for the movie. Writers working on the later half of the second season had no knowledge at that time of the new characters that would appear in the movie. In other words, David Wise did not have the intention for Dion to become Ultra Magnus when he created the character.

However, given how the set up was given early on in the War Dawn episode, it is quite possible it was his intention to make Dion be turned into Ironhide.

Many things of what David Wise had written in his script version did not make it into the animation. Most importaintly how Megatron really killed Orion Pax and the brutal reason why Optimus Prime needed to wear his famous mouth-cover.

Well, In David Wise's version, Megatron had ripped one of Orion Pax' arms of his body and used that arm to club Orion's head off his body, which dislodged his lower jaw. Later in the story young Alpha Trion appearently made some comment after Prime's introduction about the mouth-cover being needed to fix the damage to the jaw.

There was also supposed to be a part where Orion kept trying to get up, after Megatron had ripped his arm of his body. At one point, before killing Orion, Megatron made the reference that he was his worst nightmare. Giving more meaning to the fact when Optimus Prime says it to him with their first confrontation with him as Optimus Prime.

Whoa  . That does sound cool, though I can imagine why it was cut, cause it sounds extremely violent for a weekday cartoon of the 80's. Also keep in mind that I recall reading the movie didn't do so well in theatures because of the violence, and it gives credibility to my theory. That scene might fly on TV today though.

Yeah. On the Rhino dvd interview, David Wise said that he was even surprised that they still left the part in there where Orion gets shot in the chest. That alone would have been a big deal for a kid's cartoon in the 1980's!

it sounds like the original version of war dawn would have been a heck of alot better than what it was!

Yeah, but it was a kid's show. But I must admit, I would have rather seen that version of War Dawn be turned into a two-parter, then some of the existing two-parters. 8)
