In the first episode we see the insecticons, Megatron points out that they crashed in an escape pod and their systems adapted them for life in ther environment. Do we know who they were before they crashed? What were their Cybertronian forms?

one of the War Within series has them I think. I seem to remember one of them being some kind of tank.
As far as I know there was never anything mentioned about them before they were discovered on Earth in the G1 cartoon or comics.

The Marvel UK comics saw the Insecticons and the Coneheads on Cybertron immediately before they showed up in the main US run (Target: 2006), but didn't go into any real details about their alt modes or back stories. The main focus of those stories was on Ultra Magnus, the Wreckers and the Galvatron situation on Earth.

They didnt have much of a backstory in the G1 cartoons or comics.
They crashed onto Earth and left Cybertron supposedly before the G1 Decepticons.

In the WWI, their Cybertronian modes were basically the same insect forms but slightly more mechanized looking. I remember Shrapnel was essentially the same as his bug mode but a little more jet-plane-y.

Man, that is a totally bad-ass plane mode.

Isn't one of them a kind of drag racer? Some sort of low riding car with large rear wheels, I'm sure...

Yeah, Kickback. The "grasshopper-wings-as-drag-racer-pipes" is a dead giveaway.

Yup. And Bombshell was seemingly some form of tank (and by the looks of it a pretty well-armed one, too). He had tracks on his legs, a cannon mounted over his head, and it looks like he had racks of grenade launchers in his chest. But Shrapnel was the only one we actually saw in his alt-mode.

We see Kickback in the end of Target in his grasshopper mode. As he flies away from spying on the meeting.

Wonder why they didn't base their HoS modes more on their WWi Designs. (not complaining though, I loved the Insecticon Train)

I liked HoS despite it's not being anything real great. I had high hopes and was a little let down, but it was a very cool idea/series.
