Issues 9 - 17 does anyone here think the artwork was bad? I remember even when I was a kid thinking the artwork sucked.

It was the man of iron & the enemy within stories: -

I don't know about bad, the art was pretty nice, I just thought it crazy that they tried to draw the characters toy accurate when even at my young age I knew there was no way you could easily portray them doing stuff in their robot modes.

The very first UK originated material, before the franchise took off and before the title had regular artists? Yeah, not great. Even with the later UK art a lot of it's either love it or hate it. A large part of the problem is that then as now most of the comics that see print in the UK are reprints of US material. There's not much in the way of opportunities for the homegrown comic artist and as a result there ends up being a smaller pool of talent actually working in the field. Add to that the fact that many of our best end up working for the US publishers, usually after some exposure in 2000AD, and who can blame them? Working on a US book means better money and a wider circulation. UK produced comics are always going to be either overly kiddified or catering to a very niche market.

Hell, I thought it was great; some of the better artwork really. While not perfect by any means, I apprectiate the fact that the artwork was based on the toys, rather than the cartoon. It's perfectly feasible, with a little inventiveness, to draw toylike figures with suitable articulation, and they did a good job of demonstrating that.

The art was certainly... different, not horribly bad, but for what they were basing it off, they did the best they possibly could.

I liked it! Different, and one of the few times the TFs were shown as very alien. Also, always reminds me of the Ladybird TF books which I have a huge soft spot for :D
