How old is Spike?

I was watching my G1 episodes yesterday, and I laughed when BB and spke get pulled over by the police. The cop asks Spike if he's old enough to drive. Sort of funny on it's own, but then I thought to myself, "The guy works on a freaking oil rig with his dad!" So does Sparkplug force children into hard labour?
Later in the episode Spike meets Carly, she states that she's in university (doing a masters in engineering or something). They hit it off and go on a date at the end. So do university gals date underage guys?
Anyway, I thought it was funny to be that inconsistent in one episode. It was a good one anyway though. The one where Wheeljack invents the doohickey that immobilizes things.

I am 19 and am still asked if I'm old enogh to drink beer, which is real pathetic if you think of it.
I guess he looks junger then he is, or his Dad was indeed a child labor doing monster!

If you go by the
draft script for the old movie, then Spike was 15 when he first met the Autobots (and probably 16 when he met Carly). Which, of course, is still too young to be working on an oil rig legally, but not too young to be dating a 17 to 21-year old (depending on how long Carly'd been in college at that time).

Yeah, he's about 15 in Seasons 1-2, and he's in his late 30s in Season 3/4.

More like the movie and Seasons 3/4 were set 20 years in the future from Seasons 1/2.

Er, which "same thing" are you asking?

seasons 1 and 2 are set in 1985, the movie is set in 2005, and there is speculation that season 3/4 is actually in 2006!

'tis not speculation - it's evidenced by the episode title, "The Big Broadcast of 2006."
Season 1 is set in 1984, Season 2 in 1985, the movie and "Five Faces of Darkness" in 2005, and the rest of Season 3 in 2006. Applying this very logical pattern, then, one could state with some degree of certainty that "The Rebirth" took place in 2007.
Spike was 14 in Season 1, 15 in Season 2, 35 in the movie, and so on. Carly, meanwhile, is identified in the series bible as being a year older than spike, making her 16 when she met him 1985 (thereby making her old enough to drive, which she did, with the indirectly-stated point being that she was a prodigy, having already graduated from MIT). Daniel is identified as being 12 in the movie's script, meaning that he would've been born in 1993, and turned 13 in that episode that involved his birthday in Season 3.

In other words, Spike was 22 when he knocked Carly up. Yeesh. What a meatsack. That kinda has to suck: You're only 22 years into your life when Daniel comes along and ruins the rest of it.

SPike is either a teenager or in his twenties because he can work with an oil company.

I'm just looking at things from Spike's POV. Would you be happy if you had Daniel for a kid?

Why do you think SPike's so happy for Daniel to run off with Wheelie, even though they keep getting into trouble? "You want to go play with Wheelie? Ok, but no doing anything stupid. I especially don't want you taking the shuttle, access code 1984-LOL, or falling into the radioactive wsate pit. Oh, here's the key for the radioactive waste pit. Have fun."

That sentebce there, bold and italicized, I find that weird, as it applies to the real world. "The Rebirth" of Transformers actually did occur in 2007.

Crazy though this will sound, More Than Meets the Eye isn't canon. There are plenty of things that happen in that episode that are completely ignored following its conclusion. Ravage can talk; the Autobots can fly; and all of the governments of the world have given Optimus and his crew enough aid to return to Cybertron. You can add Spike working on an oil rig to the list of things to discard.
As for his age, it's never said, but he LOOKS younger than 16 and does not have a Drivers License. This doesn't necessarily mean that he's under 16. Many people don't get their licenses until they're over 16. Obviously Spike did not have a car, so maybe he just didn't bother with it.
You can assume, though, that Spike is somewhere between 15 and 18 when he meets Carly. Carly would, most likely, have to be 21 to be going for her Masters degree. UNLESS, she was still an undergrad who just had PLANS to get said Masters after she'd finished up her Bachelor's degree. I knew a few undergrads in college that just considered the Bachelor's Degree a formality on the road to their Masters.
Chances are, Spike is a couple of years younger than Carly, but it's not necessarily a huge difference. Since TFTM takes place 20 years after Season 2, and Daniel looks to be about 10 years old, Spike probably had around 10 good Daniel-free years with Carly.

There's also the consideration that Carly was VERY smart and attended MIT at a younger age than most college students.
Plus, MTMTE is canon, the reason behind all those errors is because it was the series PILOT. Besides, we never knew how often Spike worked at the oil rig. He could've just worked part-time and happened to be working on the day of the Decepticon attack. I've known 15 year olds with part-time jobs, so it's not that big a deal to saw poeple of that age working.

Spike: Me an Optimus were busy
Daniel: I wanna play
Spike: Go play with wheelie, also here is the key to the radioactive chamber or something go play in there.
Daniel: OK
Spike: Anyway could you throw him out in battle or something
Optimus:No
Spike: Yeah ok I just won't help you anymore, rember how much I helped you
Optimus:Not at all. You know your father did this to you to.
