Whish whould you have rather had lead the Autobot's during season 3 of G1? here I'll give pro's and con's to each and state my choice(I'll try to make an even ratio of pro's to con's)

Ultra Magnus
Pros:
Prime's Choice as the new leader
Very capable warrior
Always sure of himself and his decisions
Puts the other Autobots ahead of himself
This video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnfgbODV_Ik

Cons:
HE CAN'T DEAL WITH YOU NOW!
Saved Wheelie's life
Not all his decisions are the best choice
Almost always a redeco of prime(not always bad)

Rodimus Prime
Pros:
Choosen by the Matrix(probably because he touched it first, just my thoughts)
Lit our Darkest Hour
Headstrong

Cons:
Severe lack of confidence, always feels like he's in Optimus' shadow
Stubborn
Not always sure what he does is right
Gives the order to blow up Sandstorm's home just so the Decepticon's don't get it
Impatient

Personally, I like Magnus better. It might be because Hot Rod is used as a scapegoat for the cause of Prime's death(let's try to avoid this area) but I think it's because just don't like the design or character much.
You've heard my choice, let's hear what the rest of Seibertron has to say.

You know, I liked them in the show, but I've never been a huge fan of either.

I always liked the idea of Springer taking over in 5 Faces of Darkness.

Autobot Jazz, you really need to get on YouTube and watch "The Rude Awakening of Optimus Prime", if you haven't already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bq1_6D9QS9Y

I can't stand Rodimus Prime. I didn't mind HotRod though. (Actually a pretty cool character in the IDW-verse too.)

Your idea about the Matrix choosing HotRod because he touched it first would explain a lot. I'm now officially adopting your theory and will recall it every time I read my TF: Movie TPB or watch my DVD.

I've already seen that awesome vid more times than I can count, just wish DR SMOOV would make more. And thanks for adopting my theory, imagine waht would happen if Wheelie caught it .

I think Ultra Magnus would have made the better leader, certainly. He's a capable warrior and commander, and I think unfairly gets a bad rep based almost solely on the Movie (where he was just doing his best in a totally FUBARed situation anyway) even though he was portrayed (mostly) favorably in the third season.

But I think Rodimus also gets a pretty unfair rep. For one... if I started out as a young "kid" who could get away with being adventurous and impulsive, then went in one jump to having to be the mature, responsible leader charged with tough decisions *and* living in the memory of the most beloved Autobot leader there was... hell, I'd be pretty insecure and stressed too. It'd take one seriously extraordinary Bot to handle all that. Even Springer and Ultra Magnus, two very capable Bots, said they were happy they didn't end up being the ones who had to deal with the pressure.

For two, that brashness and self-questioning makes Rodimus interesting. I mean, to me, G1 Optimus was, well, pretty boring. He was too perfect, you know? Strong, wise, loved by all good guys, feared/respected by the bad guys, and the only time he ever made a mistake was when he was just so gosh darn a Paladinbot that he couldn't compromise his principles for the greater good. I consider myself a :BOT: girl, but I still had kind of a "Meh." sort of vibe towards Optimus.

Rodimus, however, had some actual spice to him. He felt like a more realistic character: one who doesn't always have the right answers, who sometimes makes rash decisions, who sometimes gets overwhelmed by it all, but in the end manages to pull it together and do the right thing. We get to see him grow over time, whereas Optimus was a very static character with little real development.

Rodimus Prime in a heartbeat.

Ultra Magnus was just a soldier... he's not worthy. :D

Why Rodimus? Well, to answer that you have to know what he is matched against: Galvatron.

Let's face it, Galvatron is for the most part portrayed as being bat-ass crazy. He's a nut. Even Cyclonus tries to get him help.

In this respect, Rodimus is the perfect leader to take on Galvatron because, in a way, he can understand him. Rodimus IS still Hot Rod underneath, he's still impulsive, he still likes living on the wild unpredictable side. The writers knew this and matched them against each other.

Don't believe me? Then look back at the cartoon. What happened to Galvatron the MOMENT that Optimus returns? Galvatron gets a lot more sane. Why? Because Optimus would not be the right match for a leader that is insane. And, guess what... neither would Ultra Magnus.

Magnus is more like a general. The sort of guy who's tough as nails, but still needs someone to say "yes, sir" to. He NEEDS authority, he NEEDS a leader. If he were to become leader, he would lack the creativity needed to effectively lead the Autobots.

Jazz never died, unfortunatley, his voice actor did just after the movie(and he was to have a big role in Season 3)

Jazz wasn't dead. He lived through the movie. He was busy at the time, however.

Oh, and I choose Ultra Magnus. Heck, just from the Marvel UK stuff, he's one of my favorite TFs.
