G1 Cartoon - "Cleaned up"

The original G1 cartoon had more animation errors than I think I've ever seen in any other show. Starscream, Skywarp and Thundercracker constantly switched colors, dialog came out of the wrong person's mouth sometimes, and there were tons of other flubs, like a mountain sized-Ramjet and other things.

As a kid, when I saw Sideswipe in Megatron's base in "The Secret of Omega Supreme" I honestly thought he switched sides, and it didn't help that my friend told me there was an episode where he did this (I think he was thinking about Mirage in "Traitor", but he didn't really switch sides either). In reality, nothing but an animation mistake.

What would you think if there ever was a "Special Edition" of the G1 Cartoon that corrected the animation errors? With Photoshop these days, it wouldn't be that terribly difficult.

Would the show be improved, or would it lose something important?

I think the cartoon would lose some of its charm and intrigue. Spotting these errors is a fun game, if one happens to be lonely.

That said, a cleaned-up version would make a great bonus feature or alternative track on DVD's, but then the cost wouldn't be warranted if it was just a bonus.

Plus, some errors can't be fixed, such as Sideswipe in Megaton's base. Certainly, they could recolour him into a generic Decepticon, but to my mind that would be just as problematic as having the random Seekers (such as Sunstorm) or a miscoloured character.

What I'd like to see, really, is G1's best stories (read: the ones that aren't ridiculous) redone by a top-end 3D company. Even better would be if the show involved Classics versions of the characters.

You mean using the original sound track, but with new animation? could be interesting.

But that would only leave Dark awakening

Well, by ridiculous I mostly meant the ones which are built around something undeniably odd. Kremzeek, I'm looking at you.
Actually, there'd likely have to be a great deal of re-scripting anyway. It would be neat to see More than Meets the Eye and The Ultimate Doom done up all purdy like, though.

I actually like the mistakes, every cartoon from that era had mistakes and they are just a part of the show.

Take away the amusing errors and the cartoon loses part of its charm. I love my error-ridden G1 DVDs and no-one can say otherwise! :-x :P

Yeah, but keep in mind, even high-end cgi shows like Beast Wars had their episodes like the "The Low Road".

That one always confused me too. I thought I had missed something for years.

By the way, what the hell is a Kreemzek?

Yet somehow this didn't stop him getting a show acurate toy before Alpha Trion, Arcee, Elita 1, the other fembots, Devcon, the aligatorcons, and all 4 types of Quintesson... somehow. Sometimes there is no justice :(

(No, those Chinese Quintesson bulb things don't count, they're not official)

Given the abundance of fans who enjoy recoloring artwork, I'm still surprised no one has at least gone through and fixed the first episode or two at least.

A person would have to be really freaking dedicated and have a lot of time on their hands to do that.

That'd take forever!

I wouldn't even know how to convert the video into a form I could recolor it

sure it can. Sideswipe was done up as "Breakdown" in "Masquerade"--EASY fix.

(of course, that might cause more problems than it solves, but eh, at least it's an option ;) )

If the cel art could be loaded into a program like Flash, recolouring would be a breeze thanks to the ability to edit multiple frames.

what if it were cleaned up properly and then re-aired, instead of having even more continuities being made!?

I'd go for that, just to see G1 back on TV.

Do you know if the re-release removed the annoying, added sound effects from the soundtrack that Rhino put in?
