Anyone try the Chinese G1 Boxset on ebay?

Hi,

Was looking for an opinion from anyone who has tried this out. Looks like I get the whole thing from ebay for the same price as one season of the US Collectors Box Set. I am very tempted but wanted to confirm the quality compared to the US release. Also, how is the Chinese menu to use?

Thanks for any input.

I think he's talking about this. there's quite a few of them on ebay. I've been tempted to pick'em up too, but would they play on an american region dvd player?

This is the set that I am looking at. It looks pretty nice. Since I missed the Rhino as well, and have a feeling the box set later this year is going to be pricey....

Noone tried it huh. OK, I guess I'll bit the bullet. I found a seller who will ship it express, 5 day delivery, for 28 bux. Add in the 19 for the box set, and thats 47 for all the seasons + movie. Not bad if it is good quality.

Selling the 2 Rhino sets I have should more than cover that. :-P

I'll update once I receive the set so that others looking for answers will have some frame of reference.

My DVD player is busted. Would it work on the PS2 I am currently using as a DVD player?

prob not. ps2's have region coding. i tried my hong kong box set on my ps2 the first ep played then it wouldnt read anything after that but i played it on my reg dvd player and it played fine. so unless ur ps2 is hacked to play burnt/imported disks then it more then likely wont play

Ah, normal DVD players do not have Region Coding then?

Most normal DVD players do have region coding. If you specifically ask for one without it at the electronics store, they will probably have only one or two. PAL plays in Europe, India, and some other places. NTSC plays in the States. Make sure you know which you're getting!

Hmm, the auction says "Region: All (Free Region cod)"

So is that PS2 compatable, or would I need to get a region free DVD player?

It works

I just got this set last week and it's great. I just tried it on my PS2 and it plays fine. It's well worth the money. Mine took about two weeks to arrive.

PAL format doesn't play on US DVD players unless you have a player that is compatible.

Sony will be releasing new G1 DVD sets later this year if you want to wait for official products instead of the Chinese versions.

Hmm, I have a feeling the US release will be like 150 bucks based on the Rhino's pricing.

I have heard nothing but good things about this set. I have gone ahead and ordered it based on everything I've heard.

The seller assures me that she will ship it Express mail and it will be here in a week. Total was 47 dollars fyi.

No to ebay off my season 2, and come out up like 10 bucks :)

I downloaded season 1 & 2 of TF last year, and I just convert the episodes to DVD format to play on anything.

Also, don't use a PS2 as a DVD player, it is the crapiest DVD player period. My XBOX dvd player was alot better.
as far as DVD's go, PAL works in Europe, UK and other countries.

NTSC (U/C) is the US and Canada.
NTSC (J) is Japan

Now, get a Cyberhome DVD player. It converts to NTSC or PAL. PAL is viewed at 50hz, so the screen will jump when you play it on NTSC TV's

I know alot about this, since some of my PAL DVD's needed to be converted to NTSC before I got my Cyberhome DVD player.

Just a note on the Chinese set - I got the metal tin one. I was really impressed with it, but I have had some big issues pop up and I don't really have a way to deal with them (can't really exchange it to hong kong). My disc 6, on one of the chapter stops, crashes any program/player that is running it.

Also, the sound synch was off on the medieval episode and some of the transitions where commercials used to be are badly edited so you get snippets of the announcer as he's cut off. Minor quibbles, but worth noting.

Just keep in mind that if you buy it, you're going to have a hard time dealing with any defects that come up!

I got mine and am impressed as well. Also, I had none of the issues that Bavolis mentioned.

As far as DVD players go, I am using the PS2 temporarily as I smashed mine when moving. Just haven't gotten around to replacing it yet......maybe cause all my money goes to Transformers ;-)

I have watched through the chinese box set. It is good. Except that the opening sequence theme is changed, other than that it is the same as what was shown on TV.

I have the Chinese set and I like it a lot. The seller was helpful enough to include a translation sheet so I would be able to navigate the menu. However, I usually just switch over to English and disable the subtitles through the use of a subtitle or language button on my remote.

The quality is good; there's maybe one episode where the transition from the commerical is a little sloppy. There's another episode where the audio cuts out about 3 seconds from the end of the episode. I can't remember which one, but it seems like Grimlock was in the middle of saying something to Prime and then the sound dies. Other than that, the quality is great.

"Except that the opening sequence theme is changed, other than that it is the same as what was shown on TV."

Is the opening sequence different than the TV version for each season? I wasn't aware that the TV version had a different opening.

I got it, and I got ripped. The Headmasters series were unplayable, but the Victory and the MasterForce set were playable, which was odd because they were all from the same company. The seller didn't believe me and didn't refund at least some of my money. And yes I have two T.V.s that play in PAL/ NTSC format and a region free dvd player that does the same thing. Well, that's the chance you take with Ebay.
