I have to say, Ultra Magnus never really struck me as the whiny, jealous type.

Great story and art, but it seems to fit more with RiD rather than G1.

I agree. I'm not up on the comic universe backstory stuff(getting caught up slowly but surely) but I like the version of UM that is a loyal soldier and reluctant leader. I'm not for making UM someone with a super inferiority complex.

All continuity issues aside (as y'all have started), as a oneshot, it had a solid theme, a good story arc, and actual character development. Nice. And maybe there's a fine, but important distinction between whiney and...I don't know, that humiliating struggle one must go through when faced with one's failings? He seemed very believeable to me, and I read his monologue as frustration with himself as much as Prime, which is quite a bit different than a whine.
Prime is always hard to get a read on--he's so 'good' that he's almost untouchable, unreal. I imagine MOST Autobots would feel 'less than' compared to Optimus.
HK, I know I would.

That's true! I considered mentioning similarity to Superman in my last post.
I don't mind UM being more than just a bland soldier character but I'd like to see him show legitimate animosity towards OP for something more solid. In the strip, he comes off as "Optimus is SO much better than me! WHY can't I be like him?". He's whiny.
Optimus being as good as he is should be inspiring and not cause others to feel less than they are.

Srly, we don't need another Starscream-like TF on the Autobots.

Hrm. See, that's not my read on Starscream at all. *INferiority* complex? Are you kidding me? If anything, he has a narcissistic streak. Sure, he whines, but that's part of his charm.
Even at his whingiest (cough cough Armada) he still thought he knew better than everyone else, Autobot OR Decepticon. That's not what Ultra-Magnus is experiencing here, at all.
HK, Oh dear, y'all have initiated a mandatory fangirl *swoon*.

Ultra Emomagnus is meant for the RiD era.
However, regardless of that, this comic and storyline is just moving and pretty epic.

I like it, it actually bears some small similarity to the Magnus backstory I had written for an alternate-universe comic I was writing!

Haha, I was surprised no one made that reference until you did.

ultra magnus:
the first shameless repaint that doesn't like being a shameless repaint
but yeah,i agree.this story(as good as it is) fits more with the rid magnus, the more immature one than the old g1 robert stack one that we all like the character for
but yeah,as good of a mosaic it is,i just can't picture g1 magnus saying/thinking something like that
also,im back.haven't been on in a loooong time, but im here to stay!

*my 3 fans now applause*

Has the "G1 armourless/white Optimus Prime looking Ultra Magnus" ever had any official appearance in the official comics? I'm more familiar with more current appearances such as Spotlight: Ultra Magnus. I'm just wondering if anything like this take on the character has been done in the comics.

That could work. Reflector could be crying about how Laserbeak does every facet of his job better than him.

Yes, once, in Dreamwave's "War & Peace" by James McDonough and Pat Lee.

Excellent! Thank you very much. I'll have to track that down.

How did I know this would be about Ultra Magnus? Even before looking at the comic, I just knew.
