Why was there such a gap between the release of Transformers The Movie ('86)from Usa/Uk to Japan.
I believe it to be released in '89?

One reason being Transformers arrived later in japan and the tv shows were shown in different timings, with japan getting transformers 2010 and scramble city

Ignore the 3 part "Rebirth" series and move on to H'Masters from US series 3, fits quite well coninuity wise.

The first 3 seasons aired a year later in Japan ('85 to '87), with Headmasters, Masterforce and Victory right behind it. Japan choose to completely ignore the event of The Rebirth (US Season 4) and the movie aired in '89 thanks to a variety of unknown circumstances. Because the movie was aired so late, the animators didn't know about the casualties and Galvatron actually being Megatron reformatted, which to many continuity glitches.
And you are committing the no. 1 sin: never try to combine the US and Japanese timelines, as they're vastly different. For instance, US Season 3 takes place in 2006, while the Japanese equivalent takes place in 2010!
