I'll give you two dates:
End of Generation 1 cartoon: 1986/1987
Release year of the Seacons: 1988
Basically, any toys beyond Headmasters and Targetmasters were marketed via the comics. That is, in the US. In Japan, the cartoons continued until 1990, thus the Seacons were included, with these changes:
- The Seacons were mere mass-produced drones, Snaptrap, renamed "Turtler" was the only sentient member.
- They didn't have robot modes, the only robot mode was Piranacon, renamed "King Poseidon"
If you want to see them in action, here are some Youtube videos. Take note that it's
not Optimus Prime in the second video, but a new character named Ginrai who uses a similar body (his Powermaster body to be exact). Optimus Prime died a second time in The Headmasters series.
Seacons assembled and King Poseidon formedSuper Ginrai vs. King PoseidonThe US and Japanese timelines are completely separate, even though the majority of the toys are the same.
