I've been meaning to buy the Madman Transformers Japanese boxset for awhile. I recently pulled the trigger and it came in the mail.

The packaging gave me a heart attack.

But the actual DVD set came in good condition. Haven't had a chance to watch it but I'm stoked to finally see these cartoons!

Hope you enjoy it.

I got the Metrodome set, which apparently contains less special features than the Madman one, but the reason I chose that one over Madman's was because it includes one thing that Madman doesn't: informative audio commentaries!

From what I understand, the Madman DVDs not only contain the Japanese audio with English subtitles, but the Omni Productions English dub audio as well (for every episode of The Headmasters, eps. 1, 4, 41, & 42 of Masterforce, and every episode of Victory).

Word of advice, Do. Not. Watch. The. English. Dub. It is beyond awful and completely ruins the experience you get from watching them.

Although, there is one thing that you may find disappointing about The Headmasters set. The episodes in that set contain all the errors and imperfections of those included in the Metrodome set. Spelling errors in the subs, missing pre- and post-episode previews, and subs from episode 26 showing up in episode 21 alongside episode 21's subs (also ruining a surprise revealed in 26 that should not have been known of yet in 21).

Though, the DVDs released by Metrodome and Madman are not the only options one has to watch these series subbed in English... ;)

I checked out the first episode. The quality isn't as nice as the Rhino or Shout release of the G1 series but it's still watchable.

It's interesting to note that they used different transition animation, it looks like a lower quality version. I like the opening credits but the ending credits are crazy such as Spike spinning Daniel like a helicopter

And yes, the English dub is terrible. I just turned on the Japanese dialogue & English subtitles.

Yeah the animation's a little different and slightly lower quality, but that kinda gives it that "classic" feel.

Though, as I said, the Headmasters DVDs are missing some episode footage, which is kinda bothersome, but this really only affects episodes 1 and 25.

Wow, cool. I have the set with Headmasters, Victory, and Masterforce. It's not the Metrodome set, Zone is not included, but it's very good quality. But it has the Bayverse TRANSFORMERS lettering and logo, and Bayverse Prime's face. Whatever.

Related question: does anyone know if the Micron Densetsu (Armada) series was ever officially released on DVD in Japan? Or how about Car Robots?

Then I guess that means yours is a bootleg, then.

Both Car Robots and Micron Densetsu have been released on DVD in Japan. Car Robots was released in 10 volumes by Pony Canyon, and Micron Densetsu was released in 13 volumes by Columbia Music Entertainment

However, neither included English subtitles and did not receive any Western releases (outside of those of their English dubs: RiD and Armada).

As far as fansubbing goes, Car Robots is (slowly) being fansubbed by a group called TV-Nihon (who have also completed subs for The Headmasters, Masterforce, Victory, Super Link, RobotMasters, Galaxy Force, and the Japanese openings and promos of Animated). As of now, they have only subbed up to episode 8, and it's very slowly going because of them having higher priority sub projects to work on, but a recent post said that they may be working on Car Robots again this year.

As for Micron Densetsu, it would seem that no one has begun to fansub it yet.
