Start with G1 (japanese series are optional, yet very cool), go to Beast Wars and Beast Machines. Those are all in the same continuity. Then skip to Animated, that should cover the cartoons nicely.

Yep, can't go wrong with the Generation One > Beast Wars > Beast Machines continuity.

I really enjoy Robots in Disguise, which was a really fun series.

I kind of watch which ever DVD is closed to grab. G1, Beast wars, armada, Animated.

I do have a soft spot for G1 I confess, but that's because Soundwave's in it.

G1 (first series!)
Beast Wars (One of the best!)
Beast Machines (It's alright once you get used to it)
Robots In disguise (Depends on your taste)
Armada (first show I ever watched!)
Energon (just watch it, even if you can't stand a minute of it, and remember that the next series is better!)
Cybertron (Tied with Beast Wars for my favorite)
Animated (eh)

G1 is required, for sure.
Beast Wars is well loved by most fans.
Beast Machines exists.
Robots in Disguise is my favorite. If you're good with subtitles, CarRobots is better.
Armada, Energon, and Cybertron are a trilogy. If you watch one, you should watch all three.
Animated is like RiD. It's got fans that love it, and it's got enemies that can't stand it. Very few people are in the middle.

LOL Funny isn't it? I kind of took that for granted, actually. Yes I do watch Prime.

I left it out since it's still currently ongoing and this person has much to catch up on from before it.

Also, where does Transformers: Prime fit in the story line or Timeline?

Oh, well, see, there isn't just one timeline in the grand scheme of the Transformers series, but rather, there are many timelines. All Transformers fiction (cartoons, movies, comics, games, toy bios, books, text stories, etc.) resides in an entire multiverse of millions and millions of realities and universes.

With just the English-language cartoons and movies alone, there are at least six different timelines to go by:
  • G1 seasons 1-2 --> G1 1986 movie --> G1 seasons 3-4 --> Beast Wars seasons 1-3 --> Beast Machines seasons 1-2
  • Robots in Disguise
  • Armada --> Energon --> Cybertron
  • 2007 Movie --> Revenge of the Fallen --> Dark of the Moon
  • Animated
  • Prime
And that's only the basic stuff. There's more out there to see than we could ever dream of. ;)

Don't Headmasters, Super God-Masterforce, and victory elbow their way into the G1 timeline following season 2?

And then there's those Japanese Beast Wars shows, Beast Wars Second and Beast Wars Neo, which come in between Beast Wars seasons 1 and 2, right.

The big question is, though, where does Kiss Players fit in?

I was listing the English-language cartoons only. Any casual fan would really get a headache once the scope of the Japanese fiction is displayed. I didn't want to overwhelm the OP. ;)

Also, no, The Headmasters, Masterforce, and Victory all come after G1 season 3. Beast Wars II and Beast Wars Neo take place "tens of thousands of years" after Beast Machines. Kiss Players takes place between the 1986 G1 movie and G1 season 3 (which takes place in 2010 instead of 2006, so there's a span of five years between the movie and season 3 in the Japanese version).

Man I think I am the only TF fan who has absolutely no use for Beast Wars. Tried watching a couple of episodes and I just couldn't wrap my head around the TFs being animals.

Well, what else would they have turned into on a prehistoric planet? Rocks? Plants? Dirt? They gotta scan something. Best let it be animals.

I can never understand why anyone would have a problem with that. I always wonder if the person saying that had a problem with Ravage, Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, the Dinobots, Ratbat, the Predacons, Slugfest, Overkill, Trypticon, the Terrorcons, the Decepticon Headmasters, the Seacons, Beastbox, Squawktalk, Sky Lynx, the Monster Pretenders, the Monsterbots....

The only difference I saw was they improved the technology for those kinds of forms. This is just curiosity, though, I'm not saying you're wrong.

My issue with Best Wars wasn't that they turned into animals, but how squishy those animal alt modes are. They seemed to take on fully organic animal shells in beast mode, while in bot mode those organic animals hung in chunks from their bodies.

Beast Wars is notable for being the only series to have Megatron defeated by flatulence.

Every Transformer has altmode kibble in their Robot Modes. That's something that can't be helped.

Plus, they do gain more G1-styled metallic beast forms in season 2, which come with vehicular forms to boot.

And yet that same Megatron is the only Megatron to have successfully conquered Cybertron.

That's Hasbro's take, it's only fair to mention that Takara appllies brute force to everything and fits it all 'nicely' into a single timeline.

There's no japanese version of Prime, though. But if there would be one, it'd go in to the G1 timeline.

No it does not. The Japanese keep all of the G1/Beast Era, Unicron Trilogy, and Movies/Animated stuff separate. The only things they have put together were Car Robots into G1 (which DOES work in a way) and their dub of Animated in with their dub of the Movies.

You REALLY don't want me to list the Japanese timelines. Trust me, it is best that it not come to that. It shall be greatly regretted should I have to list out the Japanese timelines. #-o

You, sir, have opened a can of worms. I'd really like to know how this works and it appears you're the man with the tools to do so.

I fear no regrets. Bombs away.
