Should I watch G1?

I've never watched G1 before (I grew up with Beast Wars), and was wondering if I should watch it. I've got a few opinions on the subject saying that I'll hate it because I didn't grow up watching it. I just wanted to get some opinions here on how good G1 is.

I recommend you at least give a try with the G1 cartoon, but be warned: it's an 80's saturday morning cartoon - it has its low and high points, and there isn't a constant great story behind the series (though, there are some plots that run through several episodes)

If you want to see really good stories with G1 characters, read the Marvel comics.

Yes. There's plenty of ideas, tropes, and events from G1 that crop up in later series (even the ones in other lines), that you'll be missing a lot if you don't see it.

Bull shiz. I didn't grow up with it and I love it. It's amazing.

I have to say, there are a lot of things referenced at times to G1, so it makes it fun when you notice them. Go for it watch it. Know that its old and has its issues.

You might as well, since it started it all. A lot of the character designs are pretty cool, as well some of the voices. Nobody will ever be Starscream but Chris Latta, if you ask me.

Just be prepared for lots of very silly writing, bad animation, and cheesy dialogue. It is an '80s cartoon, after all.

A bit late, but during my reviewing of the series, I've found some bad episodes... and some awesome ones as well.

I'm on episode 2. I have to say, the animation and voice acting are top notch. Much, much better than I expected.

Season one... there's almost no bad episodes, if any.

It's not necessarily about how good it is. It has its flaws. But there is a great deal to be appreciated with the original shows. If you haven't watched them before, you should. It's kind of like a history lesson that will help you understand everything that's happened since ... including Beast Wars which is a continuation of the G1 cartoon storyline (sprinkled with some really great comic book stuff to tie everything together, as best as continuity holes allow).

Am I the only one out there that doesn't think that episode is as terrible as everyone says it is?

Nah, I thought it was kinda funny. It's not great, but it isn't bad.

My nostalgia goggles prevent me from having a decent opinion.

IIRC it's the animation. When I get to it in my review thread I'll see if the story's as not-bad as I remember.

Not at all. I'd just rather GVman experience G1 without any preconceived notions. Personally, I think Kremzeek! and BOT are way worse than CIC-M.

Kremzeek! is one of my favorite episodes, actually.

IMO G1 is the very essence of Transformers. I recommend you watch it as a child would, without any preconceptions.

I consider it a right of passage. I refuse to believe anyone who didn't watch G1 to be a real Transformers fan.

Actually it was an after school cartoon not Saturday mornings. I know cuz I DID grow up watching it.
And in response to the topic.... yes you should try to watch it as best as you can. It will give a an idea of how it all began. You'll see alot of character connections from the past to the present and you'll see how certain old characters from G1 have been re-incarnated in todays TV series's and films.
And No, while the plot of G1 is not some long drawn-out story arc that takes 6 months make a point (which I don't see the big deal anyway with having that), it does have many good 2 and 3 parter episodes. And contrary to popular belief G1 does have an order into which their situation progresses throughout the seasons. (Dont forget to watch the 1986 movie in between seasons 2 and 3)
I know some may hate when people go on about G1 but look at it this way.......G1 is to Transformers what the bible is to humans.
