Beside toy promo, what's the point of COMBINING?

I saw the Unicron Trilogy lately and they sure love their combining! Especially in Energon. It's completely ridiculous.

But first, lemme tell you of the combinings that make sense and are awesome:

Multi-bots that combine to create a new character that is a monstrous behemoth à la Devastator. This one is a given.

Optimus Prime, combining with his trailer (or drones) for a super mode. When Prime is not fighting or he want to be nimble, of course he would want to stay small. Then, when the fighting get tough and he have the room, it's upgrade time!

Next, the combining that is acceptable and kinda logical:

Optimus Prime combine with Jetfire. Prime go to a super mode that give him flight capacity. Super Mode OP that fly is cool and all, but he lose the use of a another powerful and competent soldier... Honorable mention to Armada OP combining with Armada Overload. Admiting Overload is a brain-dead idiot, it make sense he's more useful as a giant targetmaster.

Finally, the combining that is completely pointless and stupid:

All the other combinings in Energon.
"Ironhide! We must fight hard! So gimme a piggyback ride! Weeeeeeeeeeee!!!"
Honestly. What the hell? Instead of having TWO GUNS and TWO SOLDIERS fighting, we only get ONE SOLDIER with ONE GUN. Without anything gained beside making a somewhat bigger target. Each times it happen in Energon, I facepalmed.
Honorable mention to Cybertron OP using that tiger bot as an arm. What's the point?

So, what do you think of this? Can you play the Devil's advocate and defend the pointless combinings? (remember that the "to show the toy's gimmicks" argument don't count)

Any other combining you find pointless? Any combining you want to see?
Why?

 Good one. And how true.

I have to agree, other than the toy stuff, there really wasn't any tactical advantage for combining in Energon. I think it was more just for fun, something kinda new. And I don't even like the toy gimmicks.

And Prime combining with Ligerjack (as well as megatron combining with Dark Ligerjack) is an awesome combo.

Any combining you want to see? Why?

Even though it would mainly be to show off a badass-looking new mode, I always though Megatron and Starscream could combine, probably in all the series they're in. It wouldn't have a lot of tactical advantage, maybe except more firepower, because Megatron can fly in most of his incarnations, but along the lines of Prime and Jetfire, it would look damn cool.

The reason I hate the Energon "powerlinking" is because of the insane body proportions, wonky limbs, and massive amounts of kibble

The only 2 times when combiners/gestalt characters made sense both involved the orginal series and Devastator when the Constructicons were tricking Grapple and Hoist into building a solar power tower and they combined to form Devastator to finish building the tower and the other was in the animated The Transformers: The Movie where Devastator was used basically as a glorified battering ram.

Robots in Disguise really made the combiners stupid by having 3 DIFFERENT Autobot combiner teams (the Build Bots, The Rail Bots and Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus) and they couldn't take out one Predacon/Decepticon combiner Ruination.

I agree in Superlink when the "linking" was indeed wonky. Proportions really sucked. But if you young ones could remember, this gimmick was just recycled from the Victory series. Remember Landcross? That gimmick back then made sense(and proportional.)

Those toys are proportional? I have these guys, but... Proportions are not their 'thing'. Cartoon didn't support their most awesome gimmick very well. Eventhough the Multiforce still is superior to any Energon bot.

:lol: Waaaaaaaaaay better than Superlink you have to admit. I mean you just flip them over and you get another combination. In SL, 8-}

My biggest grudge is with "Mega-Dinobot" - true, it wasn't in the show, but it was pointless - it made the Energon dinobots' proportions bad, and there wasn't any reason to make Grimlock and Swoop combiners.

I thought (and still do) think combining was cool when you had 5 or 6 bots combine into one giant powerful bot. They were giant behemoths that were nearly unstoppable. Cool idea.

I do not like the cartoon series where 2 bots combine into one. I never thought that gave the bots involved much of an advantage.
