Old TF fan, but new to TF comics: where to start?

I'm a 36-year-old TF fan. I've never read ANY of the TF comics, but I'd like to try some. Where's a good place to start? And please bear in mind two things:

I'd like to read some comics that are easy to obtain; I don't want to have to visit every comic store in the tri-state area to track down back issues.

As an adult, I'm not interested in comics that were written for kids; I'd like something that's "grown-up".

How about The IDW Collection Volume 1? (I only mention this one because it's available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Transformers-IDW- ... 964&sr=1-3)

Or what about Transformers Classics Volume 1 TP? (Again, I ask because it's available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Transformers-Clas ... 964&sr=1-4)

Ok, are you wanting TPB's or regular monthly's?

Do ya want older stuff or just stuff that is relevant to IDW?

If you want current stuff, you're in luck because with the new year, you can start pretty fresh with the two new ongoing series. If you can, pick up the one shot that celebrates 125 issues of IDW transformers comics. It set up the oncoming stories. It's kiiiinda a reboot. The narrative is through Op's eyes in a new age of cybertron. You start out not knowing where and when you are (like Prime) and get introduced to what's going on, who the players are, location, etc. Again, setting up for the two new comic books run. If you can, look for issues 22 & 23 titled "Chaos Theory". Just good reads. You shouldn't really have to know what happened previously in IDW. It may help, but they look to be wanting to move forward without any lingering stories.

But if you want TPB of DW or IDW stuff, let me know. I can suggeest some to ya.

I don't know what I want; that's why I'm asking for advice! I don't even know what "TPB" or "DW" mean. What are these "two new ongoing series" called? Are they separate stories in separate universes? When you say to look for issues 22 & 23 titled "Chaos Theory", which comics are you talking about? I don't really know anything about the comics; that's why I need help!

The only ones I have read are:

Marvel U.S. Series (1984 - 1991)

Marvel U.K (1984 - 1991)

Marvel U.S. Generation 2 Series (1992-1994)

If you are looking for something written for adults, then you might have a hard time getting through the first 50 issues of Marvel U.S... Issues 50-80 are really good, though. You'll have trouble finding some of them, so it's best to buy them combined as a trade paperback.

I haven't read much of Marvel U.K., but from what I know, it is basically the U.S. series with some additional issues and plot twists.

Marvel U.S. Generation 2 is only 12 issues. They are easy to find for cheap. It references the earlier series some, but can stand on its own. It also has a darker story and art, to fit in with other 90's comics - some people hate on that, but I really like it.

After the Marvel series, a company called Dreamwave had the comics rights to Transformers, and now a company called IDW has the rights.

No prob. Here's a quickie in what I meant. TPB means "trade paper back", it's when they collect a story line into a trade book so you don't have to search each issue out. Probably the best way to read comics IMO. DW means DreamWave, which was the company that did transformers comics from 2001-2005. IDW is the current publisher. Marvel>DreamWave>IDW. That's the order of the publishers that the TF comics been through.

If anything, you really are at a good point to start reading TF comics. There are two new ongoing titles that are coming out from IDW in January. Transformers: More Then Meets the Eye, and Transformers: Robots in Disguise. Both are G1-ish. Not movie universe or Armada,Energon,or Cybertron.

Here's an article on one of the new creative team for both new books.

If you want something that you don't want to wait monthly, I do suggest trying to find IDW's, "The Last Stand of the Wreckers", there's a TPB for that. It covers a "suicide squad" of Autobots. Think Nicolas Cage movie "The Rock", gotta break into a prison that has been taken over by Cons. I also love issue #22 & #23 called "Chaos Theory". That was just released a few months ago and you should be able to find them on Ebay if you want. I think there may be a TPB for them now, but I'll have to find that title for you. Those issues cover Megs n Prime before the war. Very dense read, and has great characterization for such prominent figures.

I see that you live in Bucks Co. I live in West Chester PA, not to far. If you want, we can meet up sometime and I can give you a crap load of TF comics to read.
