Has anyone compared this DVD set to the fansub released by TV-Nihon a few years ago?

I basically want to know if it is worth ripping the DVD set and using it instead (at a cost of approx 1gb per ep vs approx 250mb per ep).

I should've figured as much. I mean, I can see Hasbro wanting to use the Americanized names, but to go that far with it.... oh well. I guess the DVD set will stay shrink wrapped on my shelf and I'll keep the tv-nihon subs on my dvr.

From what I can tell, it looks like Hasbro/Shout! Factory took the subtitle scripts from the Metrodome and Madman DVDs, made whatever necessary corrections to fix spelling/grammar errors there were in the subtitles, and then made the unnecessary meddling changes to the subs that altered the meaning of the Japanese dialogue.

It seems that all three subbed version of the JG1 cartoons have some flaws of their own:

TV-Nihon - some of the translations were a little too literal
Metrodome and Madman - The Headmasters had a few spelling and grammar issues here and there
Shout! Factory - subtitle scripts Americanized and altered to not fully mean match the dialogue
