Interesting observation about G1 S3 episode

I'm currently watching the G1 episode "Call of the Primitives" on the Hub and I just noticed something.
Throughout the episode, the artwork phases between standard Sunbow 80's un-detailed ill-proportioned lazy crap to higher quality anime style and back again. This is especially noticeable during the episode's initial battle, examples being Abominus and Trypticon in flight, where he is covered in panel lines and details not typical of G1 style. The Predicons have an almost Gundam-like sleekness in their battle against the energy entity.
There is also a lot of inconsistencies, like Primacron's "assistant" being what is clearly the Autobot Matrix floating away.
I almost get the impression that this episode was a mish-mash of a Japanese episode and an American one, sort of like in the same vein as most Saban shows.
What do you think?
